May was a busy month for us at the fire department. Here is a review of things that took place throughout the month. Thank you to all of our members for your continued dedication and efforts to keep our community safe.

Today at approximately 2:30 PM; Raceland, Worthington, Flatwoods, and Russell Fire departments were dispatched to a commercial structure fire at CSX Safeway Drive, the former car shop buildings now home to Modern Metals. Upon arrival of the first units the Tanker Task Force was requested for water supply. Crews experienced heavy fire and smoke conditions in a very large structure. Crews made aggressive attacks on the fire with hand lines as well as aerial devices. The fire was fully extinguished and crews were cleaning up by 5:30 PM. There was an estimated 100,000 gallons of water used to extinguish the fire, all hauled by tankers during the event.

The Raceland Fire Department would like to thank all the departments that assisted in the efforts to contain and suppress the fire.

Raceland Fire Department would like to thank Greenup County Health Department for their generous donation of the multi gas detection monitors to all of the fire departments in Greenup County. Portable gas detectors serve an important role in many different responses as it allows us to check the atmospheric readings in an area.
