Happy Friday, AJQers!

I'm excited to announce that Kevin Mahoney and I are continuing our collaboration with a new podcast: City Minutes — where we review Quincy City Council meetings (like the minutes of the meeting... get it?).

We'll be breaking down what happened, what matters, and what Quincy residents should know, all in a way that's a little easier to digest than sitting through a multi-hour council meeting.

Since it's just two unelecteds sharing their opinions, it's admittedly far less classy than City Limits. But hopefully it's informative, entertaining, and a useful way to stay engaged with local government.

Check out our first episode, link in the first comment.

Hey folks, I probably won't be livestreaming the city council meeting tonight. It's school concert season. If I pop on later, I will let people know.

This week's AJQ Sunday Read is really more of a Sunday Watch. Where we visit the Quincy "Upside Down" and report on what is looking more and more like a made-up controversy.

Another piece of big news!!

Today Judge Connolly ruled in our favor on the signature certification issue in our Quincy salary petition lawsuit.

From the beginning, we argued that signatures from registered voters should not be discarded simply because handwriting was difficult to read when printed names and voter records could still verify who signed. Today, the court agreed.

The court ordered the City to re-review signatures in question and if the identity can be ascertained using the printed signatures they should certify them.

The ruling recognizes something important: petition rights should not be defeated by unnecessary technical barriers.

The City now has until June 18 to complete the review process and determine whether the petition reached the threshold to proceed. This should be a formality as the city already reviewed those 1,397 signatures and found that only a couple had voter registration mismatches.

We don't know what challenges still await, but for now we are gratified by this decision.

Thank you to everyone who supported this effort.

The School Committee just voted unanimously (with Bregoli absent) to recognize Lunar New Year as an official holiday.

Congratulations to everyone who fought so hard to make this happen — students, parents, teachers, advocates, and community members who kept showing up and refused to let this issue fade away.

And credit to the School Committee for getting to the right answer.

Some got there on their own. Some got there because a community kept pushing until the finish line slid right under their feet.

Either way, Quincy moved forward tonight.

That’s worth celebrating.
