Yesterday we had the opportunity to tour Pueblo Community College and learn more about their Career and Technical programs and Pueblo Corporate College.
One of the things that stood out most was how closely PCC's programs are aligned with the needs of local industry. Students aren't just learning in a classroom - they're training on the same instrumentation equipment used by manufacturers right here in Pueblo and gaining hands-on experience that can be applied immediately after graduation.
Programs like FAME USA provide an apprenticeship-style model where students earn while they learn, combining classroom instruction with real-world work experience. Nearly 90% of participants secure full-time employment with their sponsoring employer right here in Pueblo upon graduation.
In the machining program, students learn everything from traditional machining techniques to robotics, automation, and 3D printing. PCC is one of the few schools still teaching manual machining, giving students a foundational understanding of how the equipment works before advancing to robotics, automation, and 3D printing. That hands-on knowledge helps graduates adapt to the increasingly advanced technologies used in modern manufacturing.
Workforce demand is evident across many of PCC's skilled trade programs. In welding, local employers are often recruiting students before they even graduate. PCC is also introducing training on semi-automated welding equipment, helping students gain experience with technologies used in today's manufacturing environment.
PCC's impact extends beyond campus. When local high schools were at risk of losing critical programs such as machining and automotive technology, PCC embedded faculty directly into the schools to help keep those opportunities available. As a result, students can earn industry credentials before graduation and enter the workforce or continue their education with a head start.
Many of these programs are designed around the needs of local employers, helping students build careers right here in Pueblo while giving businesses access to the skilled workforce they need.
PCC's nationally recognized cybersecurity program is preparing students for careers with organizations such as the Department of Defense while helping students navigate emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and the ethical use of AI. PCC is also the first and currently only institution in Colorado offering Electric Vehicle Technician training, creating a pathway for students to enter a rapidly growing industry in as little as one year.
Beyond traditional education, Pueblo Corporate College works directly with employers to provide customized workforce training, upskilling opportunities, and mobile learning labs that bring instruction directly to businesses. Whether it's helping workers gain new skills, supporting career advancement, or assisting employers with workforce needs, Pueblo Corporate College is creating flexible training solution that meet people where they are.
Throughout this tour, it became clear that workforce development is a vital part of the economic development ecosystem. From preparing high school students for careers, to training the next generation of skilled trades professionals, to helping current workers upskill and adapt to emerging technologies, PCC is helping ensure Pueblo has the talent pipeline businesses need to grow and succeed.
For residents, it's a reminder that incredible opportunities exist right here in our own backyard. For employers and businesses considering Pueblo, it's a powerful example of how our community is investing in workforce development and building the talent needed to support long-term growth.
