Some buildings carry layered histories that make them especially meaningful.

Amanda Knight Hall at Brigham Young University was the first purpose-built women’s dormitory and later housed an early version of the Missionary Training Center. Its story reflects changing patterns in education, campus life, and community identity in Provo.

As part of our How Provo Was Saved series for National Historic Preservation Month, we’re highlighting the places that help tell Provo’s story.

Advocacy often brings together many voices around a shared goal.

In Provo, former city planner Josh Yost worked with the Provo Landmark Commission, Preservation Utah, the Utah Cultural Alliance, and other community groups to advocate for the future of BYU’s Amanda Knight Hall. Their efforts show how collaboration can help protect places that matter to a community’s history and identity.

As part of our *How Provo Was Saved* series for National Historic Preservation Month, we’re highlighting the partnerships and people helping preserve Provo’s built environment.

Thinking about swapping your lawn for gravel?
It might sound water-wise, but rock-only yards create new problems like trapping heat, increasing cooling costs, stressing trees, and removing the benefits plants provide.
There’s a better way. Choose water-wise landscaping with drought-tolerant plants, mulch, and efficient irrigation. Water-wise landscaping uses plants that thrive in Utah, ultimately saving water, while keeping our neighborhoods cooler and more enjoyable.
Remember, the most sustainable landscapes mimic our natural environment and work with it, not against it.

Architectural salvage is one way the past can remain part of the present.

In Provo, Craig Call preserved pieces of the city’s first mental health hospital by incorporating salvaged stone window lintels into new downtown construction. This practice, historically known as “spolia,” carries materials and craftsmanship from older buildings into new spaces.

As part of our *How Provo Was Saved* series for National Historic Preservation Month, we’re highlighting the many ways people have helped preserve Provo’s built environment and history.
