Answering some questions about the new plants Coast Redwoods and Gary Oaks. PP&r responded with this:
-The coast redwoods have been doing well in our current climate with their ability to handle both cool, wet conditions and hot, dry conditions.
-They are large trees with roots that are sometimes shallow, so placing them farther from the path was important.
-The area of the park is more open, and the trees wouldn’t impact the sports field.
-The trees will be watered and cared for by Urban Forestry. They send out watering trucks to deep water each tree throughout the summer.
-The redwoods may cast some shade on the oaks, someday (30 years or so), but are far enough away that the oaks will still get plenty of sunshine.
-Deciduous trees capture sunlight during the summer months when the path of the sun is closer to overhead rather than low to the south like is it in the winter.
