Oregon Food Bank’s Learning Garden is an organized space where volunteers work together to grow produce for the food bank, and share in the harvest. MULTNOMAH COUNTY MASTER GARDENERS’ ASSOCIATION DEMONSTRATION GARDEN
Saturday, July 25/10 am - noon

Nestled within the historic Green Thumb Orchard space in Southeast Portland, the Demonstration Garden is an educational hub where Master Gardeners showcase their expertise in sustainable gardening and garden management. Our work party will get dirty, assisting the Master Gardeners with a garden improvement project, and touring the garden while learning helpful gardening skills.

After the tour, everyone is invited to visit the Produce for People (PFP) program at the neighboring Brentwood South Community Garden. This volunteer PFP program is one of the largest of its kind in Portland, with both raised beds and in-ground plots. Gardeners work year-round and hold two work parties each week.

In early February, the Portland Parks & Recreation's Community Gardens Department arranged for the Friends of Portland Community Gardens (Friends) to grow starts in the Horticulture greenhouse. This was a wonderful gift for the Produce for People (PFP) program!

During the next 3 months, a volunteer team composed of Friends, PFP volunteers, and community gardeners grew starts to give to all of Portland's PFP gardens.

Rain or shine, our group met twice a week to plant, transplant and water our starts. We learned a lot about growing vegetables from seeds, enjoyed each other's company and LOVED the experience!

We could not have done all of this without the help of the following volunteers:
Cheryl Baxla, Tess Beistel, Melanie Chu, Marianne Dickinson, Lucinda Eshleman, Ellen Gehringer, Hannah Hudson, Irma Kochlavashvili, Judy Koonce, Katherine Salzmann, Carol Tompkins and Jeff Wright.

Special thanks to Shelley Grosjean, who taught us how to sow seeds properly and tend to our starts!

Lastly, thank you to the Portland Parks & Recreation's Horticulture Department for lending us space in your wonderful greenhouse.

This summer, hundreds of Portland families experiencing food insecurity will receive lots of fresh produce!

Thank you, Portland Nursery for helping Friends grow vegetable starts for Portland’s Produce for People program!

We have been growing starts in the Portland Parks & Recreation Horticulture Department’s greenhouse since early February. At every step of the way, Portland Nursery has been a wonderful support for the Produce for People (PFP) programs.

Starting with seeds donated by Portland Nursery, our seedlings spend time on a large heating mat donated by Portland Nursery. With this warm start, our seeds sprout and grow until they are ready to transplant into larger pots. As our starts grow, they are nourished by liquid fertilizer donated by Portland Nursery.

Last spring, with the support of Portland Nursery, we grew over 1,500 pots of early spring vegetables to give out to all of Portland’s PFP groups. Currently, we are growing warm-weather crops like tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, and herbs for our upcoming PFP Summer Starts Distribution.

Portland Nursery has been a wonderful partner for the Friends of Portland Community Gardens and our PFP programs. With their support, more families in Portland facing food insecurity will receive more fresh vegetables at their local food pantries!

Thank you, Portland Nursery!

This week, we moved the vegetable starts that we are growing for Portland Parks & Recreation's Produce for People (PFP) programs outside to harden off.

Since February, the Friends of Portland Community Gardens and PFP volunteers have been growing starts in a greenhouse space loaned to us by the Portland Parks & Recreation's Horticulture Department.

Our warm-weather veggies are now hardening off and looking wonderful. We will be having our Summer PFP Starts Distribution soon!
