"the average S&P 500 executive made an eye-popping 285 times more than their median worker did, up from a 268-to-1 ratio in 2023." American cities, counties and states need to look at and enact a CEO surcharge, to raise revenue and act to reduce the gap between the richest among us and the rest of us.

Details of the plan as adopted by Portland OR city council in this The Hill article: https://thehill.com/policy/finance/309430-portland-ore-will-levy-first-of-its-kind-ceo-tax/

Sen Sanders forced a vote in the Senate yesterday on two Resolutions of Disapproval SJR34 and SJR41. Those, if approved would have prevented the sale of weapons to Israel. Both bills were defeated sadly. The votes were
SJR34 Y 24 (all Dems) v N 73 including 20 Dems
SJR41 Y 27 (all Dems) v N 70 including 17 Dems.
Sen. Merkley voted Yes on both while Sen. Wyden voted No on both.
While this is a disappointing result, there were more Yes votes than on past votes on similar bills to deny weapons to Israel.

The labor movement has been under attack for decades, but at one time, the labor movement was strong enough to get national legislation passed which helped establish the rights of labor in law. That legislation was the Wagner which created the Nat. Labor Relations Board. What happened to the NLRB and how do we re-empower it?

Signed into law 90 years ago, labor’s onetime ‘magna carta’ is now a very dead letter.

Latest edition on Inequality.org email alert talks about how Portland OR is addressing the problem of the gap between CEO compensation and average worker pay. Any city, county, state could do the same, both to address the growing wealth and income inequality and the need to raise more revenue to address human needs. https://inequality.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/inequality-newsletter-may-14-2025.html?emci=170f7490-2d30-f011-8b3d-6045bded8cca&emdi=a9632d49-ed30-f011-8b3d-6045bded8cca&ceid=4045044
