Today, I heard the heartbreaking news of Bob Sallinger's passing. He was a true champion for the environment and a fierce advocate for holding Portland’s elected leaders accountable.

As executive director of Willamette Riverkeeper and formerly at Bird Alliance of Oregon (formerly Audubon), Bob fought tirelessly to ensure our city remained at the forefront of the environmental movement. I got to know him when he was advocating in City Hall and during our efforts to create a Natural Resources Department for the City as part of Charter Reform.

Bob’s collaborative spirit and unwavering commitment to conservation made a profound impact that we as Portlanders will feel for generations.

My thoughts are with his wife, children, friends, colleagues, and all of us who shared in his passion for the planet.

I invite everyone to honor Bob's legacy by continuing to fight for Portland's natural beauty. Together, let’s keep his vision alive. Rest in peace, Bob. Your work and spirit will be deeply missed.

If ever a person embodied the term “fierce, tireless advocate,” in the best sense of those words, that person was Bob Sallinger, who died unexpectedly while working late at his office at Willamette Riverkeeper in Oregon City Oct. 31. He was 57.Sallinger served as executive director for that orga...

I was honored to introduce a resolution yesterday in partnership with PSU, and countless members of community, to rename a section of SW Jackson Street to SW Rose Hill Street.

This change seeks to honor Rose Hill, a respected Indigenous leader and former student coordinator at PSU’s Native American Student & Community Center (which currently sits on SW Jackson Street).

For Indigenous students and community members, renaming this street represents more than just a new signpost - it’s a meaningful step toward cultivating belonging and representation on campus and in the broader Portland community.

Appreciative of the opportunity to join Council this morning in proclaiming October to be Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Portland. This is personal to me. I lost my mother to breast cancer just a couple years ago, and I stand in support today with the many other Portlanders who’ve been affected by breast cancer.

Today was Mayor Wheeler’s final State of the City address. He reflected on what the city and our community has experienced over the last eight years, and he shared his vision for the future of Portland. I too have a lot of hope for Portland. I want to thank Mayor Wheeler for his years of public service.

It takes a village! I recently had the pleasure of meeting with LaQuida Landford, the visionary behind AfroVillage and the glue binding the collective work of community leaders and organizations providing direct support to our most vulnerable from Old Town to Outer East Portland. Thanks for all you do to advance digital equity, climate resilience, housing and dignity, health and well-being and more. I look forward to working together and doing what I can to support you all.

The Interstate Bridge Replacement Program is seeking public comment on their Draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (DSEIS). Today, along with other members of the program’s Executive Steering Group I got a preview of the DSEIS which provides details about various bridge elements and impacts on travel times, climate, and community. The public comment period ends November 18.

On National POW/MIA Recognition Day, we honor the brave service members who remain unaccounted for and the families waiting for their loved ones to come home. For more than 80,000 Americans, the uncertainty continues—a reminder of the sacrifices they continue to make, and the responsibility we have to them.

Growing up I heard stories of both my grandfathers’ service in World War II. One fought in the Pacific Theatre, enduring unimaginable hardships, while the other, a Black serviceman, faced discrimination in uniform, only able to eat in Portland Chinese restaurants, as he was refused service in most others. Veterans in Portland still face many challenges; houselessness, both visible and invisible disabilities, jobs, and more. They deserve our respect, and our attention every day.

Today, we hold these families especially close in our hearts. If you’re looking to give back, please consider volunteering or donating to local American Legion posts, or other Veterans’ organizations. Support your local veteran serving organizations:
