US COAST GUARD APPROVED BOATING SAFETY COURSE

DESCRIPTION: The USCG Auxiliary Instructors who patrol and are familiar with Gasparilla Sound, Pine Island Sound, Boca Grande, South Charlotte Harbor, South Gulf Cove and surrounding waterways using various GPS instruments and navigational equipment will help participants enhance their knowledge of understanding basic navigational skills and to acquire knowledge to:
● Determine your location and depths.
● Locate and identify aids to navigation (ATONS), obstacles, other hazards and other features.
● Locate destinations, determine compass bearings, distances, speed & time to navigate to
a destination.
The second part of the course will be dedicated to learning how to:
● Apply modern Global Positioning Systems (GPS) equipment to determine your location and
as an aid to navigate to and from desired destinations.
● Use and store waypoints, routes and tracks in GPS equipment as a valuable tool to assist
navigation for trip planning and ex*****on. Note: Due to the many brands of GPS equipment,
the course will not be equipment specific.
*This includes a 168-page workbook, which you may keep for future reference as well as additional supplies and materials.

DATE: Saturday, AUgust 10, 2024. Time: 8:30 am to 3:30 pm (approximately 7 hours).
* Please plan on arriving by 8:00 am for registration. Class size is limited.
LOCATION: The course will be offered in a classroom setting at -
The South Gulf Cove HOA Building
14859 Ingraham Blvd
Port Charlotte, FL 33981

COST: The course is:
● $60 per couple,
● $45 per person
● $15 per person for middle or high school students.
You may pay at the door by CHECK or CASH. Credit cards are not accepted at this time.

We will plan on one short break mid-morning and another mid- afternoon.
We will break for lunch for about 45 minutes. You can pack lunch (there are ample picnic tables on the property). Also there is a Publix, McDonalds or Super Day about 5 miles away.
Light snacks, coffee and water will be provided.

Operation Dry Water (ODW) is a year-round boating under the influence awareness and enforcement campaign. The mission of ODW is to reduce the number of alcohol- and drug-related incidents and fatalities through increased recreational boater awareness and by fostering a stronger and more visible deterrent to alcohol use on the water. Operation Dry Water is an annual, National, Enhanced Outreach and Enforcement Weekend, occurring from July 4 to 6 to reduce Boating Under the Influence (BUI).
