Happy ! Though our loop trail is only a third of a mile long, it's a perfect way to get out into nature right here in Plymouth, without a long drive or time commitment. And you can take it as many times around as you'd like to see our patch of Old Growth forest.

Here are some recent shots of late-spring flowers including Mayapple, Paw Paw and White Baneberry.

Thanks to all who donated recently to help clear the fallen tree across our trail and reopen it for all!

The recent intense winds brought down a big beech tree across our path, near the entrance to the woods.

Until we can get it cleared, this means our trail is temporarily not a full-circle loop. You can still walk the trail loop almost all the way clockwise by turning left immediately after coming through the entrance gate, then doubling back when you get to the fallen tree or before.

But please don’t try to climb over the fallen tree or attempt to move, cut or go around it!

We will dip into our reserve of donated funds to pay our regular tree service to clear the path very soon.

If you came on our recent tours, you may remember our guides saying that this is one of the key reasons we seek donations and welcome new memberships or renewals.

If you’re able to give, or want to join Friends of Miller Woods, please see https://www.millerwoods.com/join---support.html

Even after we clear the path, the rest of this tree will continue to be an important part of the woodland ecosystem, just like countless trees before it.

As it decomposes, the wood will feed trillions of microbes, fungi and plants. And the sun that streams through the opening where the tree once stood will give tiny new trees their own chance to get started.

Thank you to everyone who came out yesterday to help pull invasive garlic mustard plants from the woods! We are so grateful for your assistance.

We have a few folks coming today and later this week too.

If you see garlic mustard flowering anywhere this month, pull it before it goes to seed! It spreads rapidly and outcompetes native plants.

Learn more and see photos of it in its various stages: https://www.michigan.gov/invasives/id-report/plants/herbs/garlic-mustard

Can you help us remove invasive garlic mustard from the woods on the morning of Saturday, May 2?

No experience needed! Just come any time between 9:30 and noon, and spend as long as you are able.

Wear boots and long pants, and bring gloves and 2 or 3 large plastic garbage bags.

It's easy to pull, and your help will keep it from overtaking native plants!

Our guided walks are off to a great start! The trillium have begun to bloom, the mayapple leaves have unfurled, and there are other spring ephemerals still blooming too.

The remaining tours leave at 2:30, 3 and 3:30.

We have Michiganense Natives here selling native plants for your home garden too!

Thank you to our volunteer guides!

If you’ve missed today’s tours, come see the woods on your own and use our laminated wildflower cards along the path to identify the different blooming species. Then come back all year to enjoy the trees.

Just remember to stay on the path and don’t bring strollers, bikes or animals into the woods!

Happy !

Today is a day to plant, care for, and conserve trees.

Our 10-acre patch of old-growth forest is one of few in southeast Michigan registered with the Old-Growth Forest Network. It is filled with trees from tiny seedlings, to giants that are older than Plymouth/Plymouth Township, Michigan.

Beneath their branches, a world of wildflowers is blooming right now. Come see them on your own or on our guided walks this Sunday afternoon!

Here’s another reason to come to our nature preserve on Sunday April 26 during our guided spring walk: You’ll have a chance to buy native Michigan plants for your own garden from Michiganense Natives!

They will be on hand selling wild geranium (seen here) and other wildflowers and ferns. They take cash, card or Venmo.

They have also helped us keep invasive species in check in Miller Woods, including the very gnarly Tree of Heaven. They offer this service to homeowners as well.

Check out their website to learn more! Their retail location will open in mid-May.
