Thousands of servers for State of Texas systems (DMV, DPS, TXDHHS, TWC, etc.) are down and are being brought back up in order of priority, with health, safety, and law enforcement at the top of that list.
Over 5,000 RTS (our motor vehicle computers) stations must be handled individually to be brought back online. This cannot be done via a mass update or remotely. TxDMV IT staff are developing a strategy to accomplish this. There is a plan to "train the trainer" so that tax office staff can be trained to address the issue properly on RTS stations.
I will personally be working with the DMV on Sunday to be trained on how to get the local stations back up and running. We have high hopes that Yoakum County can be back to normal on Monday morning.

As your County Tax Assessor-Collector, I have served on many Tax Assessor Collector Association committees. It is not a requirement of the County TAC to serve on any committee, but I consider it an important part of my role. One of my favorite committees so far has been the Education Committee.

This morning, myself and fellow committee members met with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles Enforcement Division via TEAMS to discuss the new title fraud trainings that will be implemented later this year. These trainings will better assist tax offices across the state in catching fraudulent transactions. Sadly, there has been a growing trend in title fraud and vehicle theft in recent years. It is your County Tax Assessor-Collector staff that are usually the first to recognize a fraudulent title, so this training is very crucial to ensure the safety of our community. I consider it a privilege that I am able to assist TxDMV with the implementation of this new project.

🔌🚘 IMPORTANT NOTE FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLE OWNERS

The cost of registering fully electric vehicles in Texas increased September 1, 2023. Senate Bill 505, passed by the Texas Legislature during the 88th Regular Session, adds a $200 annual fee for electric vehicle registration. The new fee is in addition to standard vehicle registration fees and any tax otherwise due for the vehicle and does not apply to hybrid vehicles that use a combination of gasoline and electric.

Registration renewals for fully electric vehicles completed before September 1, 2023, will not be subject to the fee until their next registration renewal in 2024.

Attention Taxpayers,

While labeled a “convenience fee”, this extra charge is actually a processing fee paid to card companies and financial services providers to authorize and complete credit card transactions. Please refer to the link in the comments for a more in depth explanation of this charge.

Currently, the convenience fee is 2.30% of whatever your total that you’re paying is. Previously, the amount was 2.50%. I was recently able to negotiate that down with our card service provider to benefit our customers more. The convenience fee is not something that Yoakum County nor the Tax Office gets to keep. It is what the card service company charges to provide this service to anyone who uses a credit or debit card. Nowadays, almost anytime that you swipe your card for payment anywhere, there will be a convenience fee added in. You may not always be aware of it because it’s usually a “hidden cost”. Since we are collecting public funds we must disclose this information instead of just add it into the bill without you knowing.

That said, whether you pay in person with a card or, online with a card it’s the same fee. Also, the same fee is charged for all motor vehicle transactions not just property tax transactions.

Customers are always welcome to pay with an e-check online and that fee is only $2.00 no matter how much your bill is.

And, all cash and regular check payments are free of extra service charges.

I hope that clears up any misunderstandings and please feel free to reach out if you ever have any questions!

Thank you!

If you own an electric vehicle or if you are considering purchasing one, a new state law has gone into place for the yearly registration fees for those vehicles.

The cost of registering fully electric vehicles in Texas increased September 1, 2023. Senate Bill 505, passed by the Texas Legislature during the 88th Regular Session, added a $200 annual fee for electric vehicle registration renewals and a $400 fee at the time of new electric vehicle purchases for the initial two-year registration period.

Texans may renew their vehicle registration up to 90 days prior to expiration.

Vehicle owners whose vehicle registration is due in September or October 2023 will receive a registration renewal notice that does not include the new fee, but the fee will still be due for their registrations if completed on or after September 1, 2023.

Revenue collected from the fee will be deposited into the state highway fund to help pay for roadway construction and maintenance projects.

Texans have several convenient options for renewing their vehicle registration:

Online via the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles website: https://renew.txdmv.gov/Renew/RegistrationRenewalServlet

Online via the Texas by Texas (TxT) mobile app or website: www.texas.gov/texas-by-texas/

By mail to your county tax assessor-collector’s office.

In person at your county tax assessor-collector’s office or approved subcontractor.
