August 28th, 1990:

1990's deadliest tornado carved a devastating path through Plainfield, Illinois. The F5 damaged or destroyed over 1,000 structures and produced extreme ground scouring. Twenty-nine people were killed, and 350 were hurt. Dr. Fujita personally surveyed this event.

Plainfield, Illinois – The 2026 Plainfield Commercial Street Criterium Cycling Race will occur on Saturday, August 29th, 2026. This event will cause traffic delays in and around downtown Plainfield. If you are not participating in, or viewing the cycling race, motorists are encouraged to avoid the downtown area on Saturday morning thru early evening between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. due to heavier than normal traffic movement and road closures.
Starting at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 29th
• Police will close the following roadways:
o James Street from Fort Beggs Drive to Lockport Street
 Local traffic only, allowed between Fort Beggs Drive and Commercial Street
o Illinois Street from Commercial Street to Ottawa Street
o Commercial Street from Illinois Street to James Street
o Chicago Street from Illinois Street to Fox River Street
o Ottawa Street from Route 59 to James Street
o Des Plaines Street from Lockport Street to Commercial Street
o Fox River Street from Lockport Street to Commercial Street
• All streets will re-open as soon as the event concludes (anticipated to be approximately 6:30 p.m.).
• During select breaks during the races, roadways will reopen briefly to allow residents to enter and exit the area.
Route 59 will not be closed; however, motorists should be advised that traffic back-up and delays are expected.
Those attending the event are highly encouraged to park at Plainfield Central High School, located at 24120 West Fort Beggs Drive. Limited ADA parking will be available on the north side of Chicago Street, between Des Plaines Street and Illinois Street.
No parking will be allowed along the race route beginning at 1:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 29th until the conclusion of the event.

✅ Test alarms monthly and replace batteries as needed
✅ Check that household members who are deaf or hard of hearing have alarms designed to meet their needs

Recently, we have been seeing an increase in calls for emergencies coming through our regular fire station phone lines. While we appreciate your kindness in trying not to bother our emergency dispatchers, if you have an emergency, always call 911, not the fire station's business phone number.

Our station phone lines are not monitored 24/7 for emergency calls and may not be answered immediately. Calling 911 connects you directly with trained emergency dispatchers who can quickly dispatch the appropriate resources and gather critical information to help responders arrive prepared.

Whether it's a fire, medical emergency, vehicle crash, gas leak, or any situation requiring immediate assistance, 911 is the fastest and safest way to get help.

By calling 911, dispatchers can:

Today, one of our crews had an opportunity to stop by a lemonade stand on Evon St. While enjoying their cool, refreshing drink they found out the kids were having the lemonade stand to raise money for Lurie Children's Hospital. So happy we had the chance to help their cause.

⚠️ Outdoor Warning Siren Update ⚠️

The recent storm caused damage to two of Plainfield’s outdoor warning sirens, and both are currently out of service while repairs are being made.

The affected sirens are:
📍 PL #5 – Route 126, east of Drauden Road
📍 PL #6 – Lockport Street, near I-55

The Village has been in contact with our siren vendor, who is working diligently to repair the damage. Unfortunately, it may take some time before these sirens are fully operational again. We appreciate your patience while repairs are underway.

📱 In the meantime, please make sure your cell phone’s emergency and weather alerts are turned ON. It’s easy to accidentally silence or disable these notifications, so now is a good time to check your settings.

🌩️ Looking ahead: The Village of Plainfield has also recently received a $500,000 grant to begin the replacement and expansion of our outdoor warning siren system. The project is currently in the planning phase and will help strengthen our warning system and coverage throughout the community.

Please remember: Outdoor warning sirens are designed primarily to alert people who are outside. They should not be your only source of severe weather information. Stay weather aware, keep those phone alerts on, and know where you can take shelter when severe weather threatens.

Two sirens may be temporarily offline, but staying informed is always in your hands. 📱🌪️
