Day 2 of the 4th Annual Science-Based Interviewing Symposium continued important conversations about how investigators approach interviews, evaluate information, and make decisions during complex cases.

Todayโ€™s sessions highlighted practical, research-based techniques designed to improve investigations, reduce errors, and support ethical interviewing practices rooted in communication and critical thinking. Discussions also examined the consequences of older interrogation methods that relied heavily on deception and psychological pressure โ€” including real-world cases where those techniques contributed to false confessions and wrongful outcomes.

At its core, this symposium is about improving the pursuit of truth. By bringing together professionals from across the country and around the world, the SBI Symposium helps agencies better understand what works, what does not, and how evidence-based practices can lead to stronger investigations and better outcomes.

Thank you to all of our presenters, panelists, and attendees for contributing to meaningful conversations focused on advancing investigative practices through science, research, and collaboration. Thank you again to our co-sponsor, the Orange County Sheriffโ€™s Department, for their partnership and support in helping make this symposium possible.

We were honored to co-host the 4th Annual Science-Based Interviewing Symposium alongside the Orange County Sheriffโ€™s Department in Anaheim, CA โ€” this exclusive law enforcement event brought together the most talented practitioners, trainers and researchers in the world.

Sessions covered cognitive interviewing, rapport-driven practices, strategic use of evidence, and more โ€” all grounded in the science of how memory and communication work. These evidence-based approaches help investigators gather more accurate information, build trust with those they interview, and reduce the risk of false confessions โ€” ultimately leading to better outcomes for victims, communities, and the justice system as a whole.

Thank you to the Orange County Sheriffโ€™s Department and all our presenters for an outstanding Day 1.

Looking forward to Day 2!

This week, our community came together to listen, act, and advocate.

Through our Ribbon of Remembrance, each ribbon now hanging represents more than a color โ€” it represents a life, a story, and the strength it takes to move forward after being impacted by crime.

Today, we share this display as a reflection of our communityโ€™s support for victims, survivors, and their families.
Every ribbon is a reminder that no one is alone and that every voice matters.

To those who submitted a name, shared a story, or stood in support โ€” thank you.
Your participation helped ensure these stories are seen, honored, and never forgotten.

As National Crime Victimsโ€™ Rights Week comes to a close, our commitment does not.

We will continue to stand with survivors.
We will continue to listen.
And we will continue to advocate.

At this weekโ€™s Board of Supervisors meeting, District Attorney Vern Pierson spoke following the proclamation of April 19th โ€“ 25th, 2026 as National Crime Victimsโ€™ Rights Week in El Dorado County.

In his remarks, he emphasized the importance of continuing our work to keep El Dorado County one of the safest counties in Californiaโ€”by ensuring victims are supported, empowered, and heard.

This proclamation serves as a reminder that while the journey toward justice can be challengingโ€”especially as criminal justice reform and post-conviction processes continue to evolveโ€”our collective efforts can lead to meaningful change and healing for individuals and families affected by crime.

Yesterday, we began by listening to one survivorโ€™s story, shared through a powerful poem.

Today, we move forward through

Today, during National Crime Victimsโ€™ Rights Week, we honor a survivor whose courage has left a lasting impact on all of us who have had the privilege of walking beside her.

Her journey was not easy, and the road was long. Still, she moved forwardโ€”steady, aware, and unwavering in her strength. Today, she has chosen to share a glimpse of her story so that others may feel less alone.

We honor her voice, her resilience, and the light she offers to others finding their way.

This weekโ€™s theme is Listen. Act. Advocate. This courageous Survivor embodies all three. And today we are asking you to start with the first one. ๐—Ÿ๐—œ๐—ฆ๐—ง๐—˜๐—ก.

Today marks the start of National Crime Victimsโ€™ Rights Week.

In our line of work, itโ€™s easy for cases to be talked about in reports and courtrooms. But behind every one is a real person and a family living with the impact.

If youโ€™re on Main Street this week, youโ€™ll see the banner recognizing NCVRW โ€” a simple reminder across our community that victims matter here.

This week is a chance to pause and keep that perspective front and center.

Listen. Act. Advocate.

Weโ€™ll keep doing the work.

On April 13, 2026, in a packed courtroom filled with those supporting the victims, Darin McFarlin was sentenced to two consecutive terms of life without the possibility of parole, as well as an additional life term, 50 years to life, and 15 years, for the August 21, 2025 brutal murders of his fiancรฉ, Marissa Divodi-Lessa Herzog, and her 7-year-old son.

Seven powerful and emotional victim impact statements were read, including a letter from the 9-year-old surviving child, offering a small glimpse into her new reality. A beautiful slideshow tribute was played, reminding everyone of the precious lives that were stolen.

McFarlin was a peace officer with Cal Fire and was highly focused on his image. On August 21, 2025, he was engaged to and living with Divodi-Lessa and her two young children. The family sat down together to watch a movie about a distinguished, well-respected firefighter who was struggling in his personal life. McFarlin became angry at the portrayal and stormed off to his room.

When Divodi-Lessa followed him, an argument took place. McFarlin then strangled her. She fled the bedroom, stating she was going to call the police to report the domestic violence. Knowing his career would be over if the incident were reported, McFarlin retrieved a loaded firearm and followed her into the dining area, where he found her on the phone with a family member. He struck her over the head with the firearm, checked the phone, and then shot her in the head, while her 7-year-old son and 9-year-old daughter were in the room.

He then turned the gun on the young boy and fired, killing him. The young girl begged for her life as McFarlin pointed the gun at her. She was able to run around a kitchen wall, preventing him from getting a clear view. He eventually told her to exit through a dog door. McFarlin then placed his phone on airplane mode and fled the scene, but was later apprehended in Nevada.

Chief Assistant District Attorney Lisette Suder spoke at the hearing, making clear that McFarlin was not a hero. She emphasized that the true heroes are the brave men and women who responded, worked to solve the case, and sought justice for the victims.

District Attorney Vern Pierson stated, โ€œThis was a horrific and senseless act of violence that stole two innocent lives and forever changed a family. Todayโ€™s sentence ensures that the defendant will never again have the opportunity to harm another person. Our hearts remain with the surviving child and all those who loved Marissa and her son.โ€

The District Attorneyโ€™s Office commends the members of the El Dorado County Sheriffโ€™s Office for their swift response and thorough investigation in this case.
