Every December 21st, the National Coalition for the Homeless and homeless service providers across the United States organize public events to commemorate and honor the individuals who have lost their lives while experiencing homelessness. Pittsburgh Mercy’s Operation Safety Net has been conducting a candlelight vigil on the winter solstice annually since 1998. To serve as a poignant reminder of the hardships and lives of those in our community who have passed away while homeless in Allegheny County, bronze plaques have been installed below a bustling highway overpass.

Join us as we pay tribute to the 25 individuals who are known to have died in Allegheny County while experiencing homelessness in 2025, and 4 individuals in 2024.
