Squirrel Hill Litter Patrol The Squirrel Hill Litter Patrol is a committee under the auspices of The Squirrel Hill Urban Coalition. Each April we sponsor a Spring Clean Up.

We care about the quality of life in Squirrel Hill and are invested in fostering a sense of community. Aside from simply creating a cleaner community and more presentable
outward appearance, one of the overarching objectives of the Squirrel
Hill Litter Patrol is to celebrate this very special neighborhood--our
very sense of community and civic pride--by collectively working
toward cleaner streets,

tidier sidewalks, and trash-free gutters
(which, in turn, leads to less polluted storm runoff, less clogging of
storm drains, and ultimately healthier Pittsburgh waterways). We care
about the aesthetic character of our residential areas and central
business district; but, perhaps more importantly, we care about the
quality of life in Squirrel Hill and are invested in fostering a sense
of community. Throughout the year, we work with individuals, school groups, and others to sponsor community service projects and other activities related to keeping our neighborhood clean. Announcing a volunteer cleanup opportunity! This coming Saturday, October 10th, there will be a Pittsburgh Parks cleanup in Schenley Park starting at the Prospect Drive Shelter at 9am (and running until 11am). Trash bags will be provided, but volunteers should plan to bring gloves (if they want to) and some extra trash bags as well. All volunteers should come equipped with face masks as well.

We regret to announce that the 2020 Squirrel Hill Community Spring Clean Up, originally scheduled for Sunday, April 19th, has been cancelled due to the current COVID-19 emergency. Understandably, the Litter Patrol feels that this is the right action to take to ensure the safety and health of our volunteers and organizers. The event may be rescheduled for a Sunday in October. Check the Squirrel Hill Urban Coalition's website (www.shuc.org) for an update in August or September. We will share updates here as they become available. Please take care of yourselves, your friends, your loved ones, and your neighbors during this difficult time!

Are you looking for an opportunity to contribute more to the Squirrel Hill community? Are you seeking volunteer opportunities that don't involve a massive time commitment? If so, please consider joining the Litter Patrol! Aside from our annual clean-ups, we're looking for volunteers who are interested in assisting us with social media and promotion, interfacing with our Squirrel Hill Urban Coalition staff and partner committees, and coming up with new ways to make a positive impact in the neighborhood. Please contact us if you're interested! Picking up trash doesn't sound glamorous, but the committee is a wonderful, dedicated group of people, and there's much more to what we do than scooping up litter throughout the year.

We have some other volunteer opportunities in addition to our upcoming cleanup:

Squirrel Hill Night Markets
Saturday, June 23, 2018, 6-10pm
Saturday, August 25, 2018, 6-10pm
Saturday, September 22, 2018, 6-10pm
For each of the night markets, volunteers are needed to help remove litter from 2 blocks (Murray Avenue between Forbes and Bartlett) from 4-6 pm prior to the market, during the market from 6-10, and again at its close, from 10-11 pm. Bags, gloves, and safety vests provided.

Year Round Opportunities:
Join the Squirrel Hill Litter Patrol's Adopt-A-Block campaign. Select a block or more of your choice (around your home or elsewhere in the neighborhood) and agree to pick up litter periodically on a schedule of your choice. We can provide bags and gloves. Hey everyone! Just a reminder about our upcoming Annual Squirrel Hill Cleanup on Sunday, April 22, 2018 from 9am-1:00pm!

Registration is at the corner of Forbes and Murray Avenues, under the library. Please bring your own water bottles; light refreshments and coffee will be available. Murray the Squirrel will be on-hand for photo opportunities. Gloves, bags, safety vests, and grabbers will be supplied.

Additional volunteers are needed to help set up from 7:30-9am, staff tables during the cleanup, and help break down tables and supplies from 1-2 pm.
