“With so many Shaler Township residents living and working within walking distance of local businesses along the boulevard and the remarkable resources we have, the library chief among them, these things that are on the boulevard appeal to all generations, all ages,” said resident Katie Gresh. “Sidewalks would not only make our community safer but would position these businesses for further growth and strengthen them for success.”

A recent discussion about sidewalks on Mt. Royal Boulevard among Shaler residents and township officials brought up a range of issues such as weighing the public good against imposing on property owners, and questions over what Shaler was, is and could be. Our neighboring communities are already investing in walkability. Multiple professional studies, including Shaler’s Parks Master Plan, recommend sidewalks. Yet Shaler has been reluctant to build even short sidewalk connections between parks, schools, and local businesses. Leadership frequently claims that occasional snow removal is “unfair” to older adults. And yet AARP’s Livable Communities guidance and other research show sidewalks are essential for safety, health, and independence as people age.

Businesses, home buyers, renters all like sidewalks. Why are they so rare in so many places?

Ya know how PennDot improved the flow of 28 by removing congestions at many major intersections over the past 20 years? And yet ... didja also notice that traffic is still really heavy at the Etna, Millvale, North Side, and 279 ramps/interchanges?

Great work by Allegheny County and Sara Innamorato to keep shopping areas accessible by bus. Hopefully we'll avoid a repeat of the negligent bus stop move forced by Simon Property Group at Ross Park Mall in 2007.

County Executive Sara Innamorato announced an agreement in principle has been reached to maintain PRT bus service at The Waterfront in Homestead. Last week PRT announced new service routes, which included discontinuing service at stops inside The Waterfront complex at the request of some developers....

Severity of injuries are directly proportional to vehicle speed. Slow dahn!

Before you put the pedal to the metal, remember that speeding can have serious consequences. Keep yourself and others safe!

Obey the posted speed limit and drive slower when warranted by road conditions.

“If we don’t make decisions based on data, it’s very difficult to make good decisions,” Lucas County Engineer Mike Pniewski said.

Clarification: ALGORITHMS use DATA to inform DECISIONS ... which have already been designed by humans to FAVOR certain criteria. The 85% "rule" is just one algorithm that prioritizes "driver speed feel". It doesn't prioritize homeowner or pedestrian safety.

There are other algorithms for setting speed limits that DO prioritize pedestrian safety...

Road safety activists and some states are pushing to depart from a longstanding rule that sets speed limits in the United States based largely on how fast drivers actually travel.
