Pittsburgh Regional Transit has released, and opened for public comment, the proposed final Bus Line Redesign, and it puts Shaler's bus service on life support. A new line, the 2L, is proposed as the only future service. For each current line that means:

P13 Flyer (becomes the 2L)
Mostly the same service: inbound 6-9; outbound 3-6.
Now ends at Allison Park Park and Ride at Route 8@Duncan
No longer services McKnight.

2 Mount Royal
Eliminated.

The proposed plan will take effect Jan 1, 2027 unless something else changes.

So about recent (FREQUENTLY FURIOUS) posts stressing how e-scooters, onewheels, and other new micromobility transport are "illegal" on roads. Well, they are ... for now.

We the people made those laws.
We the people can change them.

I think it's a good idea to just take a few moments to reflect that streets are a shared resource for people that we ALL pay for. And if we're all paying, then we should all be able to use them without an automotive "paywall".

"What do you mean?"

Well, streets were originally constructed for pedestrians, horses, wagons, etc. The automobile came later, and shifted from a rare luxury item to a common mainstay.

Driving a vehicle is a privilege and comes with great responsibility- more than most people ever consider (ask any attorney or actuary). To drive an automobile is to be in control of a machine that is easily lethal to pedestrians and cyclists.

So when car drivers operate their machines around pedestrians and cyclists using streets, just be courteous to your neighbors:
slow down
leave space
and pass safely.

We can totally all use our shared resource without yelling, honking at, or endangering anyone. Just be considerate and safe.

Good news and bad news. PRT has revised their initial proposal to eliminate all bus access through Shaler Township, currently with the expected outcomes:
2 Mount Royal will be eliminated (boo)
P13 route will no longer serve McKnight (boo)
P13 service would be expanded (woo!)
P13's service will end somewhere north of Shaler to loop back along Mount Royal

Pittsburghers for Public Transit (PPT) is organizing a press conference outside 345 Sixth Ave, followed by the PRT Board meeting at 9:30 AM with public testimony. PPT will help with prep, drafting comments, and rides.

“With so many Shaler Township residents living and working within walking distance of local businesses along the boulevard and the remarkable resources we have, the library chief among them, these things that are on the boulevard appeal to all generations, all ages,” said resident Katie Gresh. “Sidewalks would not only make our community safer but would position these businesses for further growth and strengthen them for success.”

A recent discussion about sidewalks on Mt. Royal Boulevard among Shaler residents and township officials brought up a range of issues such as weighing the public good against imposing on property owners, and questions over what Shaler was, is and could be. Our neighboring communities are already investing in walkability. Multiple professional studies, including Shaler’s Parks Master Plan, recommend sidewalks. Yet Shaler has been reluctant to build even short sidewalk connections between parks, schools, and local businesses. Leadership frequently claims that occasional snow removal is “unfair” to older adults. And yet AARP’s Livable Communities guidance and other research show sidewalks are essential for safety, health, and independence as people age.

Businesses, home buyers, renters all like sidewalks. Why are they so rare in so many places?
