Hey Pittsburg!
I just wanted to reach out and talk a little about my commitment to reducing property taxes and ensuring we are being good stewards of our taxes. We are working hard to lower the Mill levy for the 2027 budget year. This has not happened in a long time. I'm committed to working together with the other Commissioners and City staff to make it effective not only for the short term but also for the long road ahead. I hope many of you tuned in last night to see the first of many public "budget work sessions". I strongly believe that your city commission needs to be more involved in the budget process and have the knowledge and understanding of the process to help protect and guide the use of our tax dollars. These new work sessions are designed to not only build a strong working group but also keep the public informed on what is happening and why. We will work through each department and provide not only insight into what the departments do, but also what is needed in the future. Many of you asked me for more visibility and understanding. I feel confident this is the start of that process. Again, I really appreciate all the phone calls, messages, conversations, and encouragement! It really does matter!

Hey Pittsburg,
I want to share the video from last night’s meeting. With the high cost of living today and the tax environment we’re in, it’s more important than ever that you have as much information as possible.
This “error” added tension to an already high level of stress and concern that many of us are feeling. I truly appreciate everyone who reached out—by text, email, and in person—to share your concerns, positions, and thoughts.
I’m grateful that the county commission and staff came to sit down with us to address the issue and brainstorm possible solutions. I don’t believe this level of collaboration has happened in a very long time. After reviewing all the information and weighing the outcomes of each proposed option, I believe we arrived at a logical and fiscally responsible way to tackle the problem.
Moving forward, your commission will be more involved in the budget-building and vetting process—not only to ensure we’re on the right path, but also to make sure you have accurate information when questions or concerns arise. We will be focusing on effective ways to lower the high tax burden while also ensuring that our public safety is not comprised in the process. Thank you again for all the support, we are in this together!

Again,I invite you all to come to the commission meetings ,to listen, to ask questions and to speak to your commission.

I want to commend the Pittsburg Police Department, Crawford County Sheriff’s Office, Pittsburg Fire Department and Crawford County EMS for their quick response and decisive action, not only apprehending the suspect but working together for our communities safety! My condolences to the families involved. This was a senseless act that that could have been avoided!

MEDIA RELEASE

Released by Maj. A. Nance
PITTSBURG, KANSAS –

On Friday, January 9, 2026, at 8:52 p.m., law enforcement officers from the Pittsburg Police Department, along with first responder units from Pittsburg Fire Department and Crawford County EMS, were dispatched to Schlanger Park located at 725 E 6th Street in reference to a report of a shooting incident. Upon arrival, units found that an adult male had been shot and had subsequently died as a result of his injuries.

The victim, who was identified as 18-year-old Adam Basauri, of Girard, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Mr. Basauri’s body was sent to Kansas City for an autopsy.

The scene was secured and investigators with the Pittsburg Police Department responded to assist with the investigation. Witnesses on scene advised the suspect had fled the scene in a vehicle. Witnesses were transported to the police department to be interviewed while the search for the suspect was ongoing. At approximately 9:46 p.m. the suspect and suspect’s vehicle were located in Arma, Kansas, by deputies with the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office. The suspect, who was identified as a 17-year-old juvenile, was taken into custody and transported to the Pittsburg Police Department for questioning. The juvenile suspect’s vehicle was secured and towed to the Pittsburg Police Department to be processed.

After interviewing the witnesses’ investigators were able to determine that a brief altercation took place between Mr. Basauri and the juvenile suspect. During the altercation, the suspect shot Mr. Basauri.

As a result, the 17-year-old juvenile, of Pittsburg, was placed under arrest. Juvenile Intake responded and processed the juvenile suspect. The juvenile suspect was transported to the Southeast KS Regional Juvenile Detention Center in Girard. The juvenile was arrested for murder in the second degree.

Merry Christmas Pittsburg! I hope you’re home safe with your families and loved ones! We may not have a christmas with snow this year, but we definitely will have the opportunity to get some time outside to enjoy! Don’t forget to tip your wait staff and keep all of our LEO’s, EMS, Fire departments and Military in your thoughts! Be safe and be kind!

Hey Pittsburg!
I appreciate all of the outreach and support given last night and today! That was a long interesting meeting for sure! I’m confident in the decisions that were made. So many people with real issues and real concerns were forced to condense their thoughts and their information to “ Keep it under three minutes”. As you asked for change and have empowered me to help make it, the rule has been removed. I’m holding true to my word and supporting new behavior and new beginnings! Please come to the meetings and speak to your commission with less stress and pressure (without a timer)! Again thank you all for the tremendous amount of support.
Stay tuned!
