Friends of Coon Gulf

Friends of Coon Gulf C**n Gulf is a scenic rugged canyon near Pisgah, Alabama that was cut by Raccoon Creek that flows off Sand Mountain into the Tennessee River.

C**n Gulf, located in Jackson County Alabama is controlled by many public landowners. The public landowners include the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), Alabama Land Trust, Forever Wild, and the Alabama department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR). Thousands of acres are owned by the public and the public has used C**n Gulf for decades in recreational activities such as hunting, campi

ng, fishing, hiking, ATVs, mountain biking, horseback riding, etc. For many years, access to C**n Gulf was gained from the end of County Road 491. A development firm called Glawson Investments purchased 2,400+ acres of land in May 2004 north of C**n Creek and began cutting roads for development operations in that area. This development affected access to C**n Gulf and virtually CLOSED access by land. The TVA allowed the developer to bypass TVA policies & procedures in order to expedite the development. In late 2010, Forever Wild acquired approximately 3,225 acres from Glawson Developments. The 3,225 acres includes all of the land tracts that were held by Glawson in the Raccoon Creek area. Access to C**n Gulf is still not easily accessible by land at then end of County Road 495; however, there is limited seasonal access from a gravel road on County Road 495. Many people have ventured into the rugged C**n Gulf over the years for recreation. Although land access has been limited, people still venture into C**n Gulf by boat. A tornado in April 2011 caused hundreds of acres of trees to be destroyed, but the mountain runoff has cleared a good waterway for boats to explore the gulf. Paddling Link:
