Please share this important post!

Michigan's unpredictable weather means unpredictable Ice.

With several fatalities in the 2016/17 "ice" season and the 2018 ice season starting up we wanted to share a few ice facts and safety tips.

NO ICE SHOULD EVER BE CONSIDERED SAFE ICE

Ice thickness in not a reliable guide to ice safety. Ice thickness can vary by several inches within a few feet of travel distance. Weather like we recently experienced degrades the ice. The freezing, thawing, and refreezing cycles can reduce ice strength by 50%. Add in rain and snow and it degrades its strength even more.
If you must venture on the ice please wear a Personal Flotation Device (PFD). This device is truly a life saver and can increase your chance of survival from minutes to hours.
Wear high viability or reflective clothing to make it easier to spot you, especially at night.

Carry a pair of Ice Pics attached to a sleeve of your coat to assist you getting back on the ice or holding you to the ice.

Carry a cell phone in a chest high pocket for easy access to be able to call for help.

Always tell a responsible adult on shore where you are going and what time you expect to be back.

What if I break through the ice?

Try to remain calm

Turn to face the direction you came from

If you have picks reach out and dig them into the ice. If you have the strength kick hard with your legs as you pull with your arms. If you do not have pics or don't have the strength then keep your arms stretched out on the ice and remain as still as possible while calling out for help. Reach for your cell phone and place it on the ice in front of you and call 911. Place on speaker mode if possible.

If you manage to get yourself back up on the ice do NOT stand or kneel but instead roll as quickly as possible towards shore.

Seek shelter as quickly as possible and get into dry clothing. Drink warm non alcoholic decaffeinated liquids.

Call 911 and seek medical attention as necessary.

Remember:

No Ice Is Safe Ice and Always Wear A Personal Flotation Device
