Over the weekend, Station 300 assisted Station 500 along with Stations 100, 400, 200, 88, and 99 on a working fire.
While our social media policy does not allow us to share video beyond the front door in order to protect our residents’ privacy, this footage captures crews stretching a line and preparing to advance into the basement under heavy fire conditions.
At the same time, additional personnel conducted an aggressive primary search using a life/fire layout callout. Crews immediately searched around and behind the front door.
Firefighters read the smoke conditions at the door and quickly determined the fire was located below them, with strong indications that the basement door was open. Due to the velocity and density of the smoke, there was minimal lift, making layout recognition more challenging. Crews were able to quickly locate the stairs to the second floor and used their location to find basement access located below and isolate the first floor.
The initial firefighters through the door made verbal announcements to elicit a response from any trapped occupants. Crews then utilized TICs to conduct oriented searches on the first floor, second floor and basement, ultimately confirming the residence was unoccupied.
While interior crews operated to extinguish the fire and complete searches, additional personnel laddered all sides of the structure, provided booster backup, and secured a water supply from a nearby hydrant. The initial fire was knocked with less than 500 gallons of water, with additional lines in place for backup.
This incident highlights the hard work, coordination, and training of ATFD and our mutual aid partners while operating under difficult conditions.
