Secular democracy, church/state separation, and progressive change don’t just happen on their own.

We must proactively and persistently fight for them with every election, every piece of legislation, and through organized opposition to the people and systems that are dismantling our democracy.

This is not quick work. This is not easy work.

What we’re up against now has been *decades* in the making. But we refuse to stop.

When opportunities arise to use your voice and fight for your values—whether on a federal, state, local, or even interpersonal level—we urge you to take them.

Democracy only works if we work it. The primaries are here. Don’t sit them out.

Celebrating some good news from May. 👏

This month, Oklahoma became the 17th state in the U.S. to ban child marriage.

Oklahoma recently passed SB 504, requiring anyone in the state who wishes to get married to be at least 18 years old, with no exceptions. It will go into effect on November 1st.

It passed through the state Senate unanimously and was enacted without the signature of Republican Governor Kevin Stitt after he declined to take a position on the measure (ew).

⚠️ Between 2000 and 2018, nearly 300,000 children as young as 10 were legally married in the U.S. The majority of whom were girls wed to adult men, according to Unchained At Last

Child marriage leaves minors—particularly girls—vulnerable and open to abuse, since they have limited legal rights.

And with laws differing by state, it makes it far too easy to transport minors across state lines (read: trafficking) to marry them in a state where it’s still legal.

Child marriage is still legal in a disturbing number of states and we won’t be satisfied until it’s banned in all 50. One state closer!

LGBTQ+ issues are secular issues. They concern the fundamental human right to be treated with equality and dignity, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

Secularism ensures freedom of conscience, allowing individuals to practice any religion—or no religion at all—without interference. LGBTQ+ rights are a core aspect of religious freedom.

According to Pew Research, 93% of atheists + 95% of agnostics believe q***rness and q***r folks should be accepted by society—only 36% of Evangelical Christians agree (shockingly, the same % as 10 years ago).

As an organization committed to protecting the separation of government and religion, as well as universal human and civil rights threatened by White Christian nationalism, we fiercely advocate for the rights of LGBTQ+ Americans.

We’re fighting against religious extremists who seek to stir up a moral panic and enact dangerous policies that want to force LGBTQ+ folks—trans folks in particular—out of public life and out of existence.

These ill-conceived and blatantly discriminatory policies are about one thing: forcing a regressive, largely religious view of gender norms and sexuality onto the American people.

We cannot and will not ignore such bigotry.

As we commemorate Harvey Milk Day, today and every day we will continue to advocate for policies that protect the civil and human rights of every community that comes under threat from White Christian nationalist ideology.

YES, TEXAS! 💙

We’re thrilled that Texas Representative Rep. Lloyd Doggett has joined the Congressional Freethought Caucus!

The CFC is dedicated to defending church/state separation and the rights of conscience of all Americans, including nonbelievers. It’s co-chaired by Congressman Jared Huffman and Rep. Jamie Raskin.

By standing up for the Constitution and inclusive representation, Rep. Doggett’s new caucus membership is helping protect the rights of constituents across faith and non-faith communities alike.

We look forward to continuing our work with the caucus to counter the growing threats of Christian nationalism and to advance policies grounded in evidence, science and reason.

Love it when we get along. 🫶

While term limits wouldn’t guarantee strong church/state separation, they could help prevent long-term domination of Christian nationalist ideology in the Court.

Without term limits, a single justice can influence constitutional interpretation for decades. If a justice holds strong views favoring religious influence in government, those views can shape rulings for a generation.

And when a seat affects law for 30–40 years, confirmation battles become intense. Term limits would reduce the long-term impact of any single appointment.

Lifetime appointments can also incentivize justices to time their retirement based on which political party (and its stance on church/state issues) controls appointments.

Which means their biased agenda can carry on long after they’re gone. Term limits would make transitions more predictable and less politically manipulated.

“That’s how it’s always been done,” is not a good enough reason to continue doing something.

When the American people are in agreement on fundamental policy change, across party lines, we should listen.

All we want for Mother’s Day is reproductive rights.

According to the Guttmacher Institute, more than half of women of reproductive age now live in states that are hostile to abortion rights.

Most people who seek abortions are already mothers. They’re intimately familiar with the celebrations and sacrifices that go along with motherhood. They don’t need other people to tell them the weight of that decision.

Christian nationalists in positions of power are continuously trying to force pregnancy and birth on people who don’t want that experience, aren’t ready for it, or who face dangerous health outcomes without options to terminate.

Motherhood is one of the toughest overtime jobs on this planet. To suggest the choice should fall to anyone but the womb bearer themselves is ludicrous and vile.

Women never cease to amaze when handling the never ending uphill battle for bodily autonomy in this country. The resolve in the face of misogyny from religiously zealous lawmakers and institutions is an unmatched lesson in strength and perseverance.

Keep your gods out of our uteruses.

Happy Mother’s Day weekend.

May the 4th be with you. 🌌

In every galaxy, when power and “one true belief” merge, women tend to lose the most.

That’s why separation of church and state isn’t optional, it’s life-saving protection.

The Force is great for movies—not for writing laws about our bodies.

True religious freedom means no one gets to play Emperor with our beliefs or our bodily autonomy.

We’re thrilled that California Representative Rep. Gil Cisneros has joined the Congressional Freethought Caucus!

The caucus is a vital group of lawmakers dedicated to defending church/state separation and the rights of conscience of all Americans, including nonbelievers. It is co-chaired by Congressman Jared Huffman and Rep. Jamie Raskin.

By standing up for the Constitution and inclusive representation, their new caucus membership is helping protect the rights of constituents across faith and non-faith communities alike.

Don’t let Christian nationalists fool you into thinking they’re “patriotic.”

They’re not devoted to America, they’re devoted to their narrow religious views.

And it’s not what most Americans want.

As humanists, we believe that this is our one life, one chance, one beautiful opportunity to be caretakers of this Earth and leave it better than we found it for future generations.

As one of the 10 Commitments of Humanism, it is our great responsibility to care for the environment and all its inhabitants.

According to Pew Research Center, 87% of atheists “support stricter environmental regulations” + 83% of atheists believe “the Earth is getting warmer mostly because of human activity.”

There is no Planet B.

Happy Earth Day. 🌎🌿
