Haiku are poems meant to capture a moment in time with simplicity and richness, and often express emotional insights into nature.

We invited community members to craft a haiku that highlights the importance of our Urban Growth Boundary in Petaluma and the natural beauty it protects. Here is what they are sharing!

Yes on Measure Y

EDITOR: Voting yes on Measure Y to renew Petaluma’s urban growth boundary for 25 years will protect open space and farmland, prevent costly sprawl and prioritize climate-friendly city-centered growth. Measure Y maintains the existing UGB boundary. While it’s a city measure, passing Measure Y is regionally important because it maintains voter commitments to UGBs in every city. A UGB is a boundary set by voters to define the limits of urban development.

Petaluma was the first to adopt a UGB in 1998, though it initiated anti-sprawl policies long before that. The current UGB was renewed in 2010 and expires in 2025. The City Council unanimously decided to ask for voters’ approval to renew the UGB. Since Measure Y is a land use policy, it does not impose any taxes or fees. It requires a simple majority to pass. There is no opposition.

Measure Y is endorsed by the Sierra Club, Greenbelt Alliance, Generation H, North Bay Labor Council and many organizations, elected officials and individuals. We urge Petaluma voters to go all the way down the ballot and vote yes on Measure Y. Learn more at renewpetalumaugb.org

What an inspiring evening at our "Why on Y: Petaluma's Urban Growth Boundary" workshop last week! 🌟

Our community came together to learn about and support Petaluma's future. It was heartening to see so many familiar faces proudly holding "Yes on Y" signs, showing just how much we all care about preserving the character of our beloved city.

We dove into the importance of Urban Growth Boundaries (UGBs) and discovered how they protect our local farms, encourage sustainable development, and promote walkable neighborhoods. Did you know Petaluma has been a UGB pioneer since 1972? That's right – we've been leading the way in smart, sustainable growth for over 50 years!

One of the highlights of the evening was sharing the beautiful haiku our community members wrote about renewing Petaluma’s UGB. Keep an eye on our website and social media – we’ll be featuring these poetic gems soon.

Together, we're shaping a bright future for Petaluma. Let's keep the momentum going! 💚🏙️🌳
