Demolish First, Decide Later?

The WPA Pensacola Trade School (1940s) once stood in the protected Governmental Center Historic District at 215 W. Garden. The ARB approved demolition after being told a “monumental” redevelopment would replace it.

Seven years later, the historic building is gone — and the site is still an empty lot.

The demolition request came from 200 West Garden Group, including Jim Reeves and Quint Studer, for the proposed Waverly condo project. That project never happened.

So the question remains: Why demolish a historic building before plans are finalized and approved?

Once history is gone, it’s gone.

Last week at City Council, Clifford Collins Jr., Associate City Administrator, stated that he will personally review all permits associated with the NorthStar demolition project at the former Baptist Hospital site.

𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝟒𝟕𝟐 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐬 𝐝𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐲, and this current permit is only for the first 33 the City plans to cut down.

Just last month, numerous heritage oaks were removed next door — trees that had stood for generations.
Progress should not mean losing irreplaceable parts of our community without full transparency.

This added level of oversight is a direct result of voicing our community's values. 🌳

Councilman Charles Bare explains why he is concerned about FLOCK surveillance, and shares some of his experiences. He also addresses an issue brought forth by Carol Burns, regarding utility sheds in front yards.

I believe public safety is important, and the proper tools should be provided to increase the safety of our residents. However, I do not believe those technologies should ever infringe on our civil liberties.

The FLOCK contract renewal will be coming soon, and should be placed on the Council agenda for the public to be able to weigh in.

I urge the mayor not to renew the FLOCK contract on his own, without full transparency to the citizens of Pensacola.
