The Pell City Police Department is investigating an attempted ATM burglary that occurred at Metro Bank during the early morning hours today, Sunday, June 14, 2026.

A Pell City Police officer conducting proactive business checks observed suspicious activity at the bank and interrupted the crime in progress. The suspects fled the scene before obtaining any money from the ATM.

We are thankful to report that no one was injured and no money was stolen.

Evidence, including a vehicle and other items believed to be connected to the suspects, was recovered at the scene. Detectives are actively working to identify those involved through surveillance footage, technology resources, and physical evidence collected during the investigation.

We appreciate the vigilance of our officers and will provide additional information as appropriate.

Pell City Police Department will host a Community Meet and Greet on June 16 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the new Police Station, located at 305 19th St. S. The event provides an opportunity for residents to engage with the Department’s newly appointed leadership team and see inside the City’s purpose-built, 15,000-square-foot police headquarters.

"Our new command staff, led by Chief Justin Cooper, represents the future of public safety in Pell City, combining decades of expertise and leadership," said Pell City City Manager Tim Kurzejeski. “We’re incredibly fortunate as a community to be able to rely on these individuals to guide this Department forward.”

The newly appointed PCPD leadership team includes:

- Chief of Police Justin Cooper: A dynamic and proven leader, Chief Cooper has served PCPD since 2011 as Interim Chief, Captain, Regional Dive Commander, and SWAT Team Leader. - Assistant Chief Julie Quigley-Vining: Bringing 27 years of law enforcement experience, Assistant Chief Quigley-Vining joins the department following a progressive career as a Captain with the Birmingham Police Department. She holds a Bachelor of Science from UAB and specializes in data-driven crime reduction and community outreach.

In May 2026, Pell City Police Department officially launched its Chaplain Program, an initiative designed to provide vital faith-based support to both officers and the community.

The program, led by Chief Justin Cooper and the PCPD Community Policing Division, marks the return of a service that has been absent for several years.

“Our department is fortunate to have strong leadership, but some situations we face, both internally and within our community, benefit greatly from partnerships with our city’s faith-based leaders,” Chief Cooper said.

The primary goal of the program is to offer emotional and spiritual support to law enforcement personnel. Chaplains will also assist with sensitive responsibilities such as delivering death notifications and responding to traumatic incidents. These roles are now formally incorporated into the department’s chaplain program policy.

Philip Brewer, who has previously worked with the department through various programs, stepped into a key role in helping shape and define the chaplain initiative

The effort was launched by Community Police Officers Autumn Conaway and Pat Tunnell, who reached out to Andy Lambert, pastor of Coosa Valley Church of God and head of the Pell City Ministerial Association. Lambert noted that he had long advocated for establishing such a program.

Following that outreach, he and three other local ministers quickly committed to participating. The initial group of PCPD chaplains includes:

- Andy Lambert (Coosa Valley Church of God)
- Philip Brewer (Faith Community Fellowship)
- Ira Harris (First Baptist South)
- Scottie Pinson (Eden Westside Baptist)

Each chaplain will complete an extensive accredited training program covering conflict resolution, crisis intervention, collaboration, and an understanding of police culture.

The Pell City Police Department just wrapped up our 7-week Citizens Academy!

This hands-on program gave participants an inside look at law enforcement through jail and 911 tours, traffic stops, crime scene processing labs, a Use of Force class, Hoover PD’s virtual shooting simulator, a dive scenario, active shooter scenarios, and range day with demonstrations from our SWAT team.

We ended the academy with a great catered dinner from Smith’s Brew House and a mock trial at the county courthouse.

Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make this academy such a success!

"Let us leave here committed to serving better, leading better, loving our families harder, and never taking a single day in this profession for granted," PCPD Chief Justin Cooper said.

Today, May 11, 2026, Pell City Police Department joined the families of Officer Greg Surles and Lt. Richard Woods at the Pell City Police Department to remember these brave officers who lost their lives in service to our community.

For these two men, and the many men and women who are currently serving, policing is not a career. It is a calling. Today, we honor their sacrifice, their service, and the legacy they leave behind.

“Greg and Richard’s watch may have ended, but ours has not.”
