Last week on the House Floor, I was honored to recognize the life and legacy of NASCAR legend Kyle Busch. The world was stunned when we learned we had lost Kyle to a sudden, tragic illness. My heart goes out to the entire Busch family and everyone who knew him. Rest in Peace, Rowdy.

For my next Citizen Spotlight, I would like to recognize Mrs. Courtney Kunkel. Courtney currently works as a Title I teacher at Stark County Elementary School. Last month, she was honored at the 52nd annual ISBE Those Who Excel and Teacher of the Year Awards Banquet in Bloomington.

Courtney received the Illinois State Board of Education’s Award of Meritorious Service, which was presented by ISBE President Tony Sanders. According to ISBE, educators presented with the Award of Meritorious Service have gone above and beyond in service to their school communities. They are experienced educators who take on leadership opportunities and whose accomplishments uplift the culture of learning in their school. They stand as exemplars of their profession and have become integral members of their schools and districts.

Courtney, I am proud to recognize you and spotlight all of the great work you do for the students and faculty at Stark County Elementary School. Congratulations on this tremendous honor! Courtney is pictured with Stark County Elementary Principal Emily Mastin.

Another blue state governor has just opted into the federal tax credit scholarship program. We shouldn't deprive Illinois students of these benefits. Illinois should follow the lead of the 30 other states that have opted in and join this program.

Earlier this spring, I was honored to be joined at the State Capitol by six Kewanee FFA Chapter seniors on Ag Legislative Day. These young leaders represent our future, and they were joined by hundreds of other FFA members from across the state.

I am very proud of these Kewanee students for their strength, passion, and desire for knowledge in helping to shape the future of agriculture in Illinois. I am grateful that I was able to share some time with them. Thank you for coming to Springfield!

For my next Citizen Spotlight, I would like to recognize Kaiden Leezer, a Kewanee native who is an aspiring young musician. Kaiden is a Country/Southern rock artist based right here in Central Illinois. Kaiden recently performed at the Peoria Heights Food Truck Park event, which is held on the last Wednesday night of each month, April through September from 5-9 p.m. The Food Truck Park, which includes live music and at least six food trucks, is located at 1016 E. Marietta Avenue in Peoria Heights.

Kaiden performed at the first Food Truck Park event of 2026 last week, and he was featured in a Peoria Journal Star article and social media posts. Check out Kaiden’s page for more information on his next performances.

Reminder! My annual Community Clean-Up Project is underway, and we are encouraging students and classrooms in District 93 to participate! This project aims to keep our communities healthy, beautiful, and vibrant, and you can do your part by picking up trash in a part of your community.

Please submit photos of you or your class picking up bags of trash to [email protected]. All are welcome to participate, and participating students will receive a Certificate of Recognition from the General Assembly. The submission deadline is Friday, May 22.
