PEARL CITY NEIGHBORHOOD BOARD URGES EMERGENCY CLEANUP OF ILLEGAL LANDFILL ON LEHUA AVENUE.
Pearl City, Hawaii — Pearl City Neighborhood Board No. 21 is formally urging the Department of
Health to use its emergency authority to clean up the illegal landfill on Lehua Avenue, protect
community health, and prevent further harm to nearby residents.
The Department of Health’s recent emergency administrative order acknowledges that the fire at
the site has “made this an emergency situation due to the risk of hazardous substances harming our
communities, contaminating our land and reaching our waterways.”
“We agree. This is an emergency for Pearl City, and we respectfully request that it be treated as
one,” Larry Veray, Chair of the Pearl City Neighborhood Board.
After more than a year of residents raising concerns and asking for help, the time for action is now.
The Pearl City Neighborhood Board joins district legislators in respectfully calling on the
Department of Health and the Office of the Governor to take immediate action, clean up the site,
and hold the property owner accountable for the cost.
An illegal landfill in Pearl City is unacceptable, and our community deserves a prompt, coordinated
response.
