🚨 Carbon Monoxide Incident at Soccer Asylum Safely Resolved 🚨
This morning, after responding to a water-related issue on Monticello Drive, the Paxton Fire Department was notified of a carbon monoxide (CO) alarm activation at Soccer Asylum, 603 Pleasant Street.
Upon arrival, firefighters discovered elevated levels of carbon monoxide throughout the building. Staff at Soccer Asylum acted quickly and safely by evacuating everyone from the facility before fire crews arrived.
Firefighters immediately began ventilating the building and investigating the source of the CO. It was determined that the carbon monoxide was being produced by a gasoline-powered pressure washer being used indoors by a contractor working on pool restoration. Due to the size of the building and the amount of CO present, crews worked for over an hour to clear the dangerous gas from the facility.
To assist with ventilation efforts, command staff requested a large truck-mounted fan from the Fitchburg Fire Department. We would also like to thank Spencer Fire/EMS for providing town coverage while Paxton crews remained committed to the incident.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Two individuals were evaluated on scene by Paxton Fire Department EMS personnel but declined transport to the hospital.
⚠️ Carbon Monoxide Safety Reminder ⚠️
Carbon monoxide is often called the "silent killer" because it is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas that can quickly become deadly in enclosed spaces.
✅ Never operate gasoline-powered equipment, generators, pressure washers, or other fuel-burning engines inside buildings, garages, or enclosed areas.
✅ Ensure your home and business have working carbon monoxide detectors on every level and outside sleeping areas.
✅ Test CO alarms regularly and replace batteries as recommended.
✅ If a CO alarm sounds or you suspect carbon monoxide exposure, move to fresh air immediately and call 9-1-1.
Common symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include: • Headache • Dizziness • Weakness • Nausea • Confusion • Shortness of breath
The Paxton Fire Department would like to thank the Soccer Asylum staff for their quick actions, as well as our mutual aid partners for their assistance. Quick evacuation and functioning CO detection equipment helped ensure a safe outcome for everyone involved.
