The Modesto Bee is covering AB 2282 — and they captured exactly why this bill matters.

📰 "The lack of emergency care in Patterson is not a minor inconvenience — it's a public health emergency in slow motion."

That's the reality for our community. Patterson has grown from 12,000 residents in 2000 to more than 26,000 today — and could reach 65,000 within 15 years. Through all of that growth, our residents have faced a 25- to 30-minute ambulance ride to reach emergency care. Those extra miles have real consequences.

AB 2282 (authored by Assemblyman Juan Alanis) passed the California State Assembly unanimously, which would authorize a Rural Emergency Stabilization Care Unit (RESCU) in Patterson — staffed by board-certified emergency physicians, operating 24/7, and offering emergency evaluation and care, imaging, and lab services — while we build a permanent hospital.

Groundbreaking on the campus is targeted for next year, with a 25-bed critical-access hospital to follow. The RESCU is the bridge that keeps our community protected while we work to bring more healthcare services to the West Side.

April 2026 Update

05/29/2026

Big news for Patterson and the entire west side of Stanislaus County! 🎉

Today, the California State Assembly unanimously passed AB 2282 — legislation that would authorize a Rural Emergency Stabilization Care Unit (RESCU) in Patterson while we work towards bringing a hospital back to our community.

Patterson has gone without local emergency care for decades. Today, the entire California Assembly said that's not acceptable — and voted unanimously to do something about it.

AB 2282 would bring 24/7 emergency stabilization care to our community — staffed to full hospital emergency standards — so that Patterson residents aren't facing a 30-minute ambulance ride every time there's a medical emergency. It's a bridge to the hospital we're building within our healthcare campus, and today we moved one step closer to making it real.

The bill now heads to the California State Senate. We'll keep you updated as it moves forward.

Thank you to Assemblyman Juan Alanis for carrying this bill, to every Assemblymember who voted yes, and to the coalition of organizations who are standing with us — from nurses and ambulance professionals to educators, labor, and our local business community.

Earlier this month, the Patterson City Council honored Del Puerto Health Care District with a proclamation recognizing 50 years of ambulance service to our community. We are proud of this milestone — and grateful to every EMT, paramedic, and crew member who has shown up for Patterson through tule fog, summer heat, and every emergency in between.

But as Paul Willette, our Director of Ambulance Operations, writes in this week's Patterson Irrigator — the work isn't finished.

Patterson has grown to more than 25,000 residents. When someone has an emergency, the nearest ER is 18+ miles away. Every transport takes our crews out of service for 80 minutes or more. Our community deserves better.

That's why DPHCD is working toward a full healthcare campus right here in Patterson — with emergency services, primary care, behavioral health, and more. And why we're supporting AB 2282, a bill by Assemblymember Juan Alanis moving through the California Legislature that would bring emergency stabilization services to Patterson while the campus is built.

We’ve been committed to health care in Patterson for more than fifty years. And we're just getting started.
