๐บ๐ธ Keeping California Veterans Informed
As a proud member of the VFW National Legislative Committee, I am committed to keeping our District and Department informed on legislation that directly impacts veterans, their families, and survivors. California has an awesome Legislative Team. Hereโs a more detailed look at key bills currently moving through the California Legislature:
๐น SB 1407 (VFW Co-Sponsor) โ Would significantly expand tax relief by increasing the exemption on military retirement and Survivor Benefit Plan income from $20,000 to $80,000, adjust income limits for inflation, and extend the benefit through 2037. This is a major win for retirees and surviving spouses. (Hearing April 27)
๐น Property Tax Relief for Veterans
* SB 888 / SB 56 โ Excludes VA disability compensation from income calculations, helping more disabled veterans qualify for property tax exemptions
* SB 623 / ACA 5 / SCA 4 โ Allows veterans to combine homeowners and veterans exemptions, potentially increasing overall tax relief
* SB 296 / AB 2022 โ Expands eligibility for disabled veteran homeowners and surviving spouses
๐น Education & Transition Support
* AB 2203 / AB 2794 โ Expands GI Bill access and priority registration for veterans and dependents
* AB 264 โ Removes restrictions so dependents can receive both state and federal education benefits
๐น Access to Services
* AB 1638 / AB 2219 โ Strengthens County Veterans Service Officer (CVSO) programs, staffing, and accountability
* AB 2645 โ Brings DMV services directly to veterans homes
* AB 2467 โ Eases school enrollment for military families during transfers
๐น Quality of Life & Recognition
* AB 1702 โ Expands free state park access to more veterans
* AB 1765 โ Increases eligibility for vehicle fee waivers for disabled veterans
* SB 1040 โ Establishes matching funds for veterans cemetery maintenance
๐น Healthcare & Workforce
* AB 1616 โ Supports research into non-narcotic PTSD treatments
* AB 1775 โ Expands professional licensing opportunities for veterans
๐ Many of these bills are currently in Appropriations Committees or scheduled for hearings, meaning decisions are happening now.
