The Long Beach Public Library in New York was founded in 1928 and had its first site at 124 West Park Avenue. The original site has been declared a landmark by the Long Beach Historical Society just above the popular Sutton Place Bar and Grill. The first year the Library was open, more than 2000 people registered for library cards. Seven years later the Library needed a bigger space so it moved its location near the Long Island Railroad. Although the space was bigger, many patrons complained about the noise level so a new location was needed. The Long Beach Public Library moved to its current three floor building in 1954. In 1997, the Library underwent a major renovation.

๐Ÿ“š The Long Beach Public Library is closed today, June 19, in observance of Juneteenth.

Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 when the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas learned they were freeโ€”more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. Today, it is recognized as a celebration of freedom, resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of equality.

We encourage everyone to take a moment to reflect, learn, and honor this important part of American history.

โค๏ธ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ’š Happy Juneteenth.

๐ŸŽจ Thank You, Professor Thomas Germano! ๐ŸŽจ

Thank you to everyone who joined us for Professor Thomas Germano's fascinating lecture on the Whitney Biennial 2026 at the Long Beach Public Library.

Attendees enjoyed an insightful look at one of the most anticipated exhibitions in contemporary American art. Held every two years, the Whitney Biennial is the longest-running survey of contemporary American art and offers a snapshot of the ideas, artists, and conversations shaping our cultural landscape today. The 2026 Biennial features work by 56 artists, duos, and collectives exploring themes ranging from family and community to technology, ecology, identity, and the complexities of modern life.

Inspired by the lecture? The Whitney Biennial 2026 is on view at the Whitney Museum of American Art through August 23, 2026, offering plenty of time to experience this thought-provoking exhibition firsthand.

Thank you, Professor Germano, for bringing the world of contemporary art to our community and helping us see the Biennial through a deeper lens. We look forward to your next visit to LBPL!
