In Tennessee, the Republican Party (TNGOP) enforces strict “bona fide Republican” requirements for candidates seeking the party’s nomination in primaries. These rules, outlined in the party’s bylaws, aim to ensure that only committed, LOYAL Republicans represent the party on the ballot. Tennessee has open primaries (no formal party registration for voters), so the party uses these internal rules to gate-keep who can run as a Republican. You cannot have a recent history of supporting non-Republican candidates.
To serve as a Republican candidate, one must be fully and unequivocally committed to the Republican Party. (For example, if you support an Independent over a Republican candidate, you cannot reasonably expect the Republican Party to support your own bid to run for the United States Congress as a Republican or any office).
