The American Legion's Four Pillars
Still Serving: It’s Who We Are

In 1919, The American Legion was founded on four pillars: Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation, National Security, Americanism, and Children & Youth. Each of these pillars encompasses a variety of programs that benefit our nation’s veterans, its service members, their families, the youth of America and ordinary citizens. Our organizat

ion’s positions and programs are guided by resolutions passed by American Legion National Convention delegates, and committee and commission members who represent nearly 2 million wartime veterans and their families. These programs, and the men and women who take the time to perform them, are what allow The American Legion to make a difference locally, and on the state and national levels. It’s who we are and what we do. Pillar I – Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation

The first Wednesday of every month at Coffee & Chat, we take a short pause to recognize and honor our members with Quilts of Valor. This month, we had the privilege of recognizing four amazing veterans and members of our post: Spike Turbull, USA; Stephen Cramer, USN; Robert Hanky, USAF; and Ken Howell, USA. Congratulations to these four amazing veterans for their distinguished careers both in and out of the military. We are proud to honor and celebrate each of them and call them friends.

Be the one who notices. Be the one who cares. When someone is in distress, your kindness can be the spark that helps them hold on.

Lend an ear without judgment. Sometimes, simply listening can ease a heavy burden. Ask how they’re really doing, give them time to answer, and let them know they are not alone.

Be a friend who stands beside them. Offer a comforting word, a helping hand, or a quiet presence. Encourage them to reach out for support and remind them that needing help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

You may not be able to fix everything—but you can make a difference. This June, and every month, choose to be the one who shows up, listens, and cares.

PSA:

There is a spouse of a Vietnam Veteran who needs OUR assistance. The Veteran is currently in a care facility, and his spouse has been living in her car due to the condition of their home. The house is filled with years of belongings and memories that now need to be cleared out so she can safely move back in. There is a significant amount of work to do. We will only be emptying out the house of its "memories" (Junk).

Waste Pro has donated a dumpster, and the county will waive the dump fee.

CJ from CJ’s Junk Be Gone has already stepped up and secured a new stove, refrigerator, and microwave for the home.

They are looking for approximately 10–20 volunteers to assist this Saturday (30th May) and Sunday (31st May). They will begin at 0800 each day and work until sunset. Water, masks, and gloves will be provided for anyone who needs them.

This is an opportunity to give back to those who came before us and ensure this Veteran family is not forgotten. If you are willing to help, please reach out. Every set of hands will make a difference.

No judgment will be casted as the spouse is already embarrassed about the situation.

The address is:

Thank you to everyone who attended and shared in our Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony. Your presence helped us honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

We were privileged to share a special Memorial Day message from U.S. Senator Ashley Moody to the people of Florida, presented by Lurys Dominguez, Staff Assistant to Senator Moody. We were also honored by an inspiring address from Seminole County Sheriff Dennis Lemma.

The ceremony included a formal presentation of the colors by the Oviedo High School JROTC and a moving tribute by our Post 243 Honor Guard. The pledge of allegiance by Eagle Scout Jillian Ellmyer, Scout Troop 208, Frank Simpkins recognizing our Gold Star families. A memorial prayer and benediction by Pastor Brian James, First Methodist Church of Oviedo, and Post 243's Elton Hogan reciting the Flanders Field poem We are deeply grateful to the local and state dignitaries who attended and showed their support.

Thank you all for joining us in this important time of remembrance and reflection.
