Friends of Greenlawn Cemetery Foundation does a fantastic job bringing to life the rich history of Portsmouth. I had the opportunity to assist this year with presenting George Hamitt, a Virginian that served in the Revolutionary War and later as a widower he settled in Scioto County in Clay Township on a 160 acre farm nicknamed Lovers Lane.

Driving through Franklin Furnace today, I’m encouraged to see growth coming back to the county. I recognize not everyone agrees with this sentiment, but when I see construction, I see opportunity for our future.

In these pictures you can first see the Vertiv site that is already expanding. This year they have created hundreds of jobs and continue to do so. This manufacturing facility is a welcomed addition to the local economy.

As I drive past the Google site it is honestly hard to comprehend just how big this site is. Currently there is a lot of dirt work and prep happening. Over 150 Union workers are onsite and in the very near future there will be 3500 construction workers, electricians, carpenters, pipe-fitters, labors, operators building the 2 Million square foot facility.

Once completed this location will support well over 500 employees. 500 families. 500 opportunities.

Between the 2 locations pictured here is over 1000 careers, built by thousands of union workers.

Every time I take a run through Portsmouth I get encouraged. You can see local businesses reinvesting, new parks popping up (I see you Market Street Park), and community institutions enhancing our area.

Today, while checking out the river front development, I was please to see this New Softball 🥎 field for the Lady Bears. 🐻 It’s good to see this quality program get their own facilities.

Go Bears.

Riverdays was absolutely packed last night, and I’m thinking tonight will be a repeat of the crowd enjoying some good food and entertainment.

When you see a volunteer, take the time to thank them for their commitment to helping with this Portsmouth tradition.

You know it’s River Days weekend when you have the opportunity to support the Rotary at the annual fish fry for lunch.

It’s a busy weekend in the county with Friends Of Portsmouth River Days. Including concerts, rides, vendors, and food throughout the weekend.

Of course tomorrow is the Parade and Pageant.

Take time to stop over at ETC park in the mornings or evenings to watch the Fly In of the power paragliders.

And support the Portsmouth Raceway Park with a couple nights of exciting dirt track races.

There are so many activities taking place this weekend thanks to the many volunteers and organizers that make it happy.

Main Street Portsmouth in Bloom plays such a vital role in enhancing our community. From their beautification efforts throughout Portsmouth, to the Farmers Market, their impact is easily felt.

This week we had the opportunity to attend their Farm to Table Dinner where they recognized many of their outstanding Farmers Market vendors. Then of course on Saturday we made our weekly stop at the Market to see all of these vendors in action.

The Farmers market is a great place to connect directly with farmers, bakers, artists, and other vendors. For several, this market starts as an incubator for new business ventures.

I proud of the continued support the Scioto County Commissioners provide for to this worthwhile group.

We are stronger together.

Today at Centrus we heard from Governor Mike DeWine and Lt Governor Jim Tressel during the Heart of Opportunity Tour where they discussed CNBC ranking Ohio #1 as the Top State for Business.

This picture represents the hard work and partnerships forged over the past several years to move Scioto County forward. Joining the Governor we have the County, Southern Ohio Port Authority, Shawnee State University, Community Action and Portsmouth Area Chamber of Commerce represented. Each entity, along with the City of Portsmouth(present but not pictured), SOMC and DESCO, helps to make up the board for the Scioto County Development Corporation.

Here we stand united and working hard to move our community forward together.
