Eagle Point Energy Center LLC (“EPEC”) is a waste-to-energy facility located in Orrington, Maine. The facility can generate up to 25MW of electricity by processing municipal solid waste as a fuel source. This process reduces the volume of solid waste entering
Maine’s landfill systems by up to 90%. The facility plays an important role in Maine’s solid waste management hierarchy and presents a viabl

e and proven option for reducing landfill volumes in addition to the production of consistent renewable energy. EPEC is committed to providing a safe and supportive workplace as well as environmental stewardship. EPEC is supported by the member communities participating in its waste-to-energy process. Eagle Point Energy Center LLC acquired the assets of the Penobscot Energy Recovery Center (“PERC”) in the spring of 2024. PERC opened in 1988 as Maine’s first and largest waste-to-energy facility. EPEC is managed by local energy developers with a commitment to providing reliable, affordable, and environmentally sound waste management solutions for the region. The facility is co-owned by the Town of Orrington. While the facility is currently shut down, EPEC is working towards a safe and effective restart of the waste-to-energy facility.

EPEC has been working to remediate all of the contamination left by the previous owners. A great example is this concrete pit (1 of 4). This project represents over $100k in cost to properly remove and dispose of contaminated material, water, and bring in clean material to fill / cap the pits so this type of contamination can never happen again.

We are happy to report that, as of yesterday, all the waste left behind has been removed. The completion of this clean up is a major milestone, and we would like to thank all parties that worked together to make this happen for the facility and for Orrington.

Officials believe the cause originated deep within a pile of trash on the tipping room floor.
