Just a heads up to District residents. Tax bills went out, in case you didn’t notice, El Medio Fire was NOT on your tax bill. Sometimes you just have to be patient and see the truth for yourself, rather than trust the rumor of ill intentions.

The El Medio Fire Protection Distric Board members have voted to begin the process of dissolution. What this mean is; we will be winding things down, paying off existing debts, and dissolving the district altogether. What this means for the taxpayer is; once everything is settled, those residents and land owners that paid their last property tax within the district boundaries, will receive the special district assessment portion back, in either the form of credit to your next tax assessment, or a check for the amount paid. Also, there will no longer be a tax assessment on future property taxes. Unfortunately, this also means El Medio will be gone forever. We tried very hard, to explore every possibility of resinstating the department, to serve the residents of the district. Unfortunately, that was not a possibility, with the last tax measure on the ballot being voted down, and the cost of agreements. Those that live within the city limits will receive their emergency services from Oroville station 1, and those that live in the county portion of our district will receive emergency services from station 72 in Palermo. With the decision to dissolve, there are many legal processes and procedures we must complete. Thank you for the patience as we tried everything within our power to serve you. May peace and blessings be with every member of the district.

This is an update on what is happening at El Medio Fire Department currently. The El Medio Fire District Board of Directors have voted to move forward with plans to re-open El Medio Fire Department Station 3. Staff and the directors have been working diligently on plans and actions to make this happen as quickly and smoothly as possible. The ultimate goal of El Medio is to get back to a full time operational status. We are trying to work an agreement out for dispatching. Once that takes place, we should be set on a good easy path to open the doors. However, at the present time, that is a huge hurdle to jump. Please know we are doing everything in our power to make it happen. Also, regarding the questions we have heard related to taxes being assessed on your tax bills, that is correct. Those taxes are still coming to El Medio. They are still being used for the sole purpose of the Fire Department with full accountability and oversight. El Medio Fire has been billed for each and every call Butte County Fire/Calfire has responded to within the district boundaries. We ask district members that may have any questions to please attend the board meetings to voice your questions or concerns. Should we not be able to arrange a dispatch agreement by June 15 2022, the Board will not assess properties within the district for the upcoming tax roll, meaning we will not charge taxes on properties within the district boundary.

It is with the most heavy heart that I share the passing of my dearest friend, and mentor, Pastor and Fire Captain Stephen Terry. Tonight we lost a great man. A wonderful role model. A hero. Steve, you will always be in my thoughts and in my heart my friend. I’ll carry the hose from here. Rest In Peace and put gods hands on Annie and the family as they navigate through this.
