When shoulder season hits (or what normal people call fall), it’s a perfect time to engage in those more high intensity actives too hot for the summer. While mountain biking is a great option, the chance for injury is high. A couple recommendations to be prepared for the unexpected medical emergency include
— ALWAYS WEAR THE CORRECT HELMET
— carry a small first aid kit with an emphasis on wound management
— if someone falls, get them off the trail as quickly and safely as possible to avoid a collision
— bike with friends!

Home to the Makah Indian Tribe, Neah Bay has some of the most beginner friendly waves in the PNW. When not at Hobuck beach, Cape Flattery offers stellar views of the coast after a short hike.

Surfing is not the most common water based sport, but understanding ocean currents, marine wildlife, and drowning prevention are all hallmarks of wilderness medicine. And as an added bonus, surfing in Washington brings an extra challenge: cold. Afterall, the best time to catch waves out here is in the middle of winter.
