Behind every fire department statistic is a firefighter who left their family to answer the call.

So far in 2026, Alabama fire departments responded to 322,727 incidents, requiring 522,420 apparatus responses. The average incident lasted 42 minutes and 51 seconds.

Think about that for a moment.

For Alabama’s volunteer firefighters, those 42 minutes aren’t part of a paid workday. They’re time away from dinner with their family, a child’s ballgame, a spouse, their regular job, or a much-needed night’s sleep. Yet when the pager goes off, they answer.

Out of all of Alabama’s fire departments, well over 90% are volunteer or primarily volunteer departments. Only a small percentage are fully career staffed. That means the vast majority of emergency calls across our state depend on men and women who serve simply because their communities need them.

Whether it’s one of the 199,364 medical calls, 17,537 fires, or thousands of rescues, hazardous incidents, and public service calls, someone is leaving what matters most to respond.

The next time you see a fire truck go by, remember: for many of those firefighters, the clock doesn’t just measure the emergency—it measures time they can never get back with the people they love.

Support your local fire department. They answer the call, whether they’re paid or not.

🔥 Congratulations to Explorers Brody, Caleb, and Madi! 🔥
This week, these three outstanding members of the Cleveland Fire Department Explorer Program completed the 2026 Blount County Jr. Firefighter Academy — a challenging, hands‑on experience that mirrors what firefighters face every day.

Over the past week, they learned tactics from some of Alabama’s finest career and volunteer firefighter instructors, developing skills in firefighting, rescue, and EMS. Their dedication, teamwork, and determination make us proud to call them part of the Cleveland family.

👏 We’re proud of your hard work and commitment to serve!

🚨 Blount County Fire Departments Need Volunteers — Now More Than Ever 🚨

Our local fire departments are struggling to find volunteers, and the need is real.

You might think, “I can’t enter a burning building.”
That’s okay — not everyone does.

Maybe you can:
• Run medical calls
• Help clear trees from roadways
• Assist citizens during emergencies
• Support operations behind the scenes

And if you’re thinking, “I can’t handle blood,” there’s still a place for you. Fire departments need people with all kinds of skills, abilities, and comfort levels. There truly is a role for everyone.

If you’ve ever considered serving your community, now is the time. Reach out to your local fire department and ask how you can help.

Just remember this one question:

“What if no one answered the call?”

Your community is counting on someone to step up. Maybe that someone is you.
