During an election year, there are certain restrictions on my communications to prevent the use of public, state resources for campaign purposes. One of these restrictions is a freeze on this Facebook account, meaning the page will not be updated beginning May 4, 2026, until after the general election in November. Per the Legislative Ethics Board, this page is unable to accept comments during this same time period. If you have questions or comments about legislative issues, please feel free to continue to contact me using the link below. Thank you!

My latest e-newsletter just went out (follow link: https://tinyurl.com/MENAEYA). It includes information on Election Year Activity (EYA) restrictions; how Washington is responding to the SCOTUS latest decision to weaken voting rights; and the digital version of my 2026 session report that was mailed to household in the 29th District last month.

05/04/2026

Starting May 4, 2026, there will be a pause in my official updates due to Election Year Activity (EYA) restrictions, which were put in place to ensure no state resources are used for campaign purposes during election years. This means no e-newsletters or social media posts from my office until after the November election—but my work on your behalf continues. If you have questions or want to share your thoughts on legislative issues, please don’t hesitate to reach out via phone or email. I’ll get back to you as soon as I can. My bill to establish a voting rights “preclearance” process has been signed into law! This measure creates a state-level process to prevent discriminatory election changes before they take effect.

Given the SCOTUS decision last week, this bill is more important than ever. As Chair of the House State Government and Tribal Relations Committee, I am proud to add, we advanced an additional five bills to collectively strengthen voting rights and to protect election integrity in Washington state. You can read up this package of bills here in my previous press release: https://housedemocrats.wa.gov/mena/2026/03/09/democrats-advance-package-of-bills-to-strengthen-voting-rights-and-election-integrity/

I know there are folks in our community – and many people across the state – who remain fearful and deeply concerned about the escalating tensions we’ve seen with immigration enforcement over the last year. That’s why I want to share this resource from the Washington State Attorney General. No matter your status, it’s important we are all aware of our rights should we encounter civil immigration enforcement at some point in Washington state.

Also: If you or a loved one is confronted by ICE, or witnesses suspected ICE activity, you can call the statewide rapid-response phone number 1-844-724-3737 to report the encounter. This hotline is operated by the Washington Immigrant Solidarity Network. It was created in 2017 and has received state funding since 2020.

Please do share this with anyone who may benefit.

House Bill 1903 has been signed into law! This measure establishes a statewide program to help low-income households manage rising utility costs by expanding access to energy bill assistance. This program will ensure hardworking families aren’t forced to choose between keeping the lights and heat on and paying for other necessities.

Last year, the Legislature passed House Bill 1217, also known as rent stabilization. This measure amended both the Residential Landlord Tenant Act and the Manufactured/Mobile Home Landlord Tenant Act providing additional tenant protections, including limiting how much a landlord can increase a tenant’s rent over a 12-month period. This change provides much needed predictability for renters at a time when the cost of living is high for many of us.
