Riley Alton, Trustee

Riley Alton, Trustee I'm running for Trustee to serve our community as a homegrown leader with a fresh perspective.

An Ohio State University graduate and proud product of Olmsted Township, I've devoted my life to public service and making government work better for you. By listening to you, I will fight to keep Olmsted Township a great place to live, work, retire, raise a family and start a business.

From weekly kickoffs to the biggest stage in sports, it all starts with union labor in small town Ohio.

🏈 Every official NFL football, including those used in the Super Bowl, is handcrafted in Ada, Ohio, by the skilled members of Workers United Local 1385 at Wilson Sporting Goods. Their craftsmanship has helped power the game we all love, one stitch at a time.

The Township Board of Trustees has submitted a letter to the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) expressing concern over FirstEnergy’s request to allow longer and more frequent power outages.

Communities across Northeast Ohio have raised serious public safety and quality-of-life concerns, particularly for residents with medical needs, fixed incomes, and those impacted by repeated service disruptions.

The Township Trustees joined other local and state officials in urging PUCO to carefully consider the impacts on residents and prioritize reliable electric service.

Over the last several years, we’ve made real progress in fully funding our police and fire departments. Unfortunately, the rising cost of everything, from healthcare to vehicles and maintenance, along with the expiration of federal grant funding threaten to unravel much of that progress. There will be an upcoming ballot issue to maintain existing services. I encourage voters to help keep our community safe and support our first responders by making their voices heard this May.

Please keep in mind that Ohio law prevents the safety levies that our police officers and firefighters depend on from generating ANY additional revenue when property values increase — even when costs and call volume go up — except for new construction. However, revenue from new construction has increased by less than 1% per year since the 2019 safety levy was passed. The 2024 safety levy was a straight renewal of that levy with no increase, as the police and fire budgets were still healthy enough to avoid one at that time.

The Olmsted Township trustees have approved a 4-mill safety levy to appear on the May 5 ballot.

2025 was a very busy year for Olmsted Township’s safety forces. Our police officers and firefighters continue to demonstrate integrity, professionalism, and ingenuity in answering the call to service. They deserve our support, respect, and gratitude for keeping us safe every day — no matter the weather or the situation.

As the calendar flips to 2026, Olmsted Township first responders are reflecting on the previous year.

On Christmas Eve 1968, in Lunar orbit, the Apollo 8 crew took this photo: “Earthrise."

I'll never forget how inspiring the Apollo missions were to my brother and me as kids. They showed us what our country and humanity can accomplish when we work together toward a common goal.

“I’ll remember 2025 as a year of progress, where we quietly did the work,” said Alton, who was re-elected to his second term as a trustee. “Whether that was improving day-to-day services, modernizing our operations or strengthening our leadership and investing in workers, I hope residents see their local government working harder and more efficiently for them.”

Olmsted Township Trustee Riley A. Alton said 2025 was a year to remember.

“Described by Alton as having a ‘wealth of experience,’ Sonneborn’s 26-year career with the Olmsted Township police department found him in seemingly every role.

This includes beginning as a dispatcher at the turn of the century before becoming a patrol officer and later serving as a detective, sergeant and SWAT team negotiator.”

Roughly two months after the retirement of Police Chief Mark Adam, Olmsted Township recently appointed his successor, Lt. Scott Sonneborn.

Olmsted Township is a very special place, in part because of events like our annual tree lighting. Thank you to our Service Department for another excellent light display and to our administrative staff for ensuring Santa could be here from the North Pole!
