Sheriff Darrell Weaver issued a statement today after the District 21 District Attorney's Office announced this week that Sutton Petz was sentenced in Cleveland County District Court to life in prison for Murder in the Second Degree, and 20 years for DUI-Great Bodily Injury.

Petz was sentenced in connection to the 2024 crash that claimed the life of 18-year-old Maddix Bias and severely injured others.

Sheriff Weaver, a longtime drug enforcement official, served as an author of the Maddix Bias Act while serving in the Oklahoma Senate.

This is not about Sara Polston, it is about Micaela Borrego and her family. In her filing, Sara claims that her rights were violated because there was no notice and no opportunity for her to be heard. In reality, Micaela Borrego is the one who was given no notice that her life would be changed forever. Her attorneys want us to believe that Sara was targeted by this law. In fact, Sara was targeted for favoritism by the DOC. SB137 was not created for Sara Polston, it was created to make sure no other family or victim is ever denied justice in this way again and that no other offenders will exploit this same loophole in the statute.

Sara Polston served 73 days of an 8-year prison sentence until laws changed, possibly sending her back to prison; she's now suing to remain outside of prison walls.

Thomas Ferguson II was remembered and honored today during the sentencing of Tracy Mitchell. This tragedy never should have happened and his family should never have had to endure this 4 year wait for justice. Everyone who spoke for Thomas did an amazing job conveying who he was and what he meant to them.

‼️SENTENCED‼️

Tracy Mitchell, 47, was sentenced to 25 years with the first 15 years to do in the Oklahoma Department of Corrections. She was charged with Manslaughter in the First Degree for killing Thomas Ferguson, 36, in a DUI accident on July 14, 2022.

Mitchell entered a blind plea of guilty in March. The Court ordered a pre-sentencing investigation (PSI) and scheduled sentencing for today.

Mitchell was taken into custody at the completion of the hearing.

It was great to see you all on Thursday evening for our Public Safety Forum. This is just the beginning of the conversation around this important topic. Special thanks to our co-sponsors The Demand Project and Americans for Public Safety, and our moderator Rick Brinkley. UCO has the best people and facilities. We want to thank candidate Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond for answering every question put to him. We hope these questions can be answered by the other candidates in the near future!
