Oakland, CA — On Tuesday, October 27, over 150 Alameda County residents turned out for the joint meeting of the Alameda Health System (AHS) Board of Trustees and the County Board of Supervisors to demand stronger sanctuary policies for both hospitals and the county as a whole.

The hearing comes after ICE attacked two community members, leaving them in need of urgent hospitalization — one of them suffering six broken ribs as a result of ICE's violent assault.

The victim was then taken to Highland Hospital for treatment while still in ICE custody. At the meeting, it was revealed that ICE had no warrant for the victim's arrest.

The victim's attorney, Nikolas De Bremaeker, shared how ICE agents continued to abuse the victim inside the hospital — from refusing to loosen handcuffs while nurses provided treatment, to the ICE agent who broke their ribs sitting on the victim's bed and grinning at them.

Healthcare workers, civil rights organizations, union members, and immigrant rights advocates from all backgrounds spoke at the hearing.

Healthcare workers, including prenatal nurses, shared that over 50% of their patients did not show up to their appointments due to ICE's presence and the fact that a victim was being held in custody inside the hospital.

Advocates shared testimonies of witnessing Alameda sheriffs and Highland Hospital security escorting ICE throughout the hospital and harassing community advocates sharing know-your-rights information outside the hospital.

The meeting ended with AHS and County Supervisors stating that they would attempt to compile information on the incident. AHS was asked by County Supervisors for a timeline on their report, but could not give an answer beyond "as soon as possible."

Oakland police were also at Highland Hospital providing additional security for ICE.

Please come to this special meeting tomorrow at 4PM to demand that AHS do better to protect patients. Be prepared to speak up during open comment and share your concerns about the collusion you've seen at Highland Hospital this week, including:
• ICE use of hospital public and private parking areas
• Facilitation of ICE movements by Alameda County Sheriffs and hospital security
• Harassment and threats to community legal observers by hospital security and Alco Sheriffs
• ICE agent who broke 6 ribs allowed to sit on patient's BED "grinning at him" (per pt's attorney via KQED)
• The need to investigate and prosecute ICE Agent Michael Caldwell (identified by ICE List) who is implicated in breaking 6 ribs of patient in custody.
• ICE agents trying to direct treatment and view patient records
• Collaboration between hospital security, medical staff and Alco sheriffs to engage in subterfuge and prevent community from documenting that the patient was discharged.
• ICE using Eastmont Mall - a site of multiple AHS care facilities, to stage for raids and abductee transfers.

Despite heroic efforts by some members of the care team, Highland hospital administration allowed ICE agents to move freely and further brutalize a patient inside the hospital. The night he was removed, ICE vehicles were seen shortly after in the Eastmont Mall parking lot. THIS CAN NEVER BE ALLOWED TO HAPPEN AGAIN. We need to demand that county supervisors and AHS trustees take real, tangible steps to prevent Highland and other AHS sites from ever being used by ICE to brutalize members of our community.

Alameda County Sheriff, Alameda Health System bosses, and Intercon Private Security have all colluded with ICE to try to kidnap our neighbor, while his legal team races against the clock to find a way to free him.
