Two Junior Firefighters from Station 101 made history today!!

Thanks to a legislative change a few years back, a 17 year old is now allowed to attend Live Fire training;this allows them to be completely trained and certified when they hit the age of 18.

One of our juniors who isn't of age yet for this training attened to act as support staff!!

Some of the juniors took advantage of the break in the weather last evening to get familiar and work on the basics of a hoseline and nozzle. They were also able to assist in setting up a drafting operation!! These kids really put their hearts into learning the different tasks associated with the Fire Service.

Get the youth involved they're not only the future of our communities but the future of this country!

Part of the goal of our page is to shed some light on each of our current junior firefighters.

We asked each of our juniors a set of questions.

Next up is Kylie. Kylie is also a junior firefighter at the Lake-Silkworth Volunteer Fire Department.

Kylie is in 9th grade.

Future Career?- Surgeon

Why did you want to be a junior firefighter?- Kylie said she wanted to become a junior firefighter because her dad, uncle, grandma, and grandpa are/were firefighters, and she looked up to them the most. She thought it would be cool to do and she wanted to help people any way she could.

What does it mean to you to be a junior firefighter?- Kylie said being a junior firefighter means that she has a responsibility to protect all people, and help them in any way, shape, or form that she can.

What have you learned so far?- Kylie said so far, as a Junior Firefighter, shes learned how to put on fire gear, how to roll fire hose, how to put out a fire, how to land a life flight helicopter, and how to help people in need.

What do you enjoy most about being a junior firefighter?- Kylie said the thing she enjoys most about being a Junior Firefighter is that you’re basically a part of a big family, you’re able to help and save people, and I like being able to do that!

We're all so grateful and proud of Kylie ! We can't thank her enough for her hard work!!

As we wrap up our final junior firefighter spotlight, there seems to be a common theme of "family". It's no secret that these teens gain a giant family and support system that most times extends beyond their home fire company.

If you or a loved one would like to become a junior firefighter in our program, please feel free to reach out to any member or stop by on a Monday night at 7:00 pm.

What does it mean to you to be a junior firefighter?-Brianna said being a junior firefighter means she can do what she can to help others.

What have you learned so far?- Brianna said she's learned a lot; from fellowship among her peers to the tools and equipment we use and why we use it.

What do you enjoy most about being a junior firefighter?- Brianna said she enjoys everything, but she likes being hands-on with training and other things she's able to do.

As we wrap up our sixth junior spotlight, there seems to be a common theme of "fellowship /friendship." Peer support and friendships are important for teens and can be lifelong support systems.
