Shortly after 6 p.m. tonight, Nottoway County and the Towns of Blackstone, Crewe, and Burkeville experienced a severe thunderstorm with damaging straight-line winds that toppled multiple trees throughout all of these areas. Crews from Dominion Energy, Southside Electric Cooperative, Town Public Works, and VDOT are working to quickly restore electricity to the remaining 400 electrical customers at 9:30 p.m. Our total outage was just under 700 customers tonight and several roads were blocked by large trees. Please be patient as crews continue to clear streets and evaluate the damages and electricity status. All incidents from the storm have been reported. Please be careful in your travels as some roadways have lots of debris from limbs, etc.

THE BURKEVILLE & BLACKSTONE LIBRARIES WILL BE CLOSING AT NOON ON FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 4th & THE CREWE LIBRARY WILL BE CLOSED ON MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 7th FOR LABOR DAY.

We have taken a few calls on the smoke today and most of you probably saw the Canadian wildfires on the news. It is drifting further southward in the U.S., and we may see this for many days.

These wildfires to our north are causing poor air quality and widespread smoke or light haze throughout Nottoway County and the surrounding region. Citizens should limit time outdoors, avoid strenuous activity, and use caution if they have respiratory conditions or are sensitive to smoke. N-95 masks work well for those who need to filter their air when outside.

No local controlled burns are causing this smoke at this time; it is from Canada. Local officials are monitoring these smoky conditions and will provide updates if anything changes with this situation.

Strong Work on Friday by all Fire & EMS companies in Nottoway County and our mutual aid partners, as they worked an aggressive interior fire attack with an outside temperature of 98 degrees and heat index up to 105 degrees!
