Congratulations to Jason Delli Carpini, the recipient of the 2025 Norwood League of Women Voters Margery McKenna Memorial Scholarship!
This annual award recognizes a student who has demonstrated interest or participation in the civic process. The $1,000 scholarship honors the legacy of Margery McKenna, known as Mardie, a long-time Norwood Town Meeting member, School Committee member, and dedicated League of Women Voters member who was foundational to the local chapter. The award selection is based on a student's interest and commitment to activities that represent Mardie's ideals of civic engagement and environmental study.
In his application essay on the most important civic issue facing his generation, Delli Carpini focused on the disconnect between young people's desire to contribute and the lack of clear pathways to do so.
"I think the biggest civic issue my generation faces is the gap between people who want to solve problems and the systems that don’t let them," he wrote. Delli Carpini highlighted that while young people are encouraged to get involved, they often find it difficult to translate that desire into action. "Too many students are ready to contribute but don’t know how, or don’t feel like they’re being taken seriously," he added. He advocated for creating more hands-on opportunities and trusting young people with real civic roles.
