New Horizons is spreading the word from one of our community partners, Southern California Edison (SCE), about the importance of calling 811 before starting any digging project.

Whether you’re planting a tree, installing a fence or beginning a larger construction project, underground utility lines may be closer to the surface than you think. Calling 811 at least two working days before digging allows professionals to mark buried lines and can help prevent injuries, power outages and costly repairs.

The service is free and required by California law. If you or someone you know is planning a project, remember to call before you dig.

Yesterday, we caught a LOT of smiles at New Horizons! 😄

Catch A Smile LA filled the room with laughter, music, and joy, turning the event into a whole lot of fun for our Members.

The challenge was simple: share a ball, catch a smile, and pass the joy along. Our Members were more than happy to play along!

Founded in memory of filmmaker Garry Marshall, Catch a Smile LA was co-created by father-daughter team Harvey Keenan and Felicia Shapiro to spread kindness, connection, and joy throughout the Los Angeles community.

Thank you, Catch a Smile LA, for bringing your music, energy, and so many smiles to New Horizons. Because smiles really are contagious!

New Horizons is spreading the word from one of our community partners, Southern California Edison (SCE), about a new program supporting homeowners rebuilding or repairing properties affected by the Eaton and Palisades wildfires.

Through SCE’s SWITCH program, eligible homeowners can receive incentives ranging from $100 to $2,400 toward qualifying energy-efficient upgrades, including heat pump systems, induction ranges, and smart thermostats.

Funding is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. If you or someone you know owns a home in one of the impacted areas, we encourage you to learn more about the program and eligibility requirements.

We’re excited to share some big news: New Horizons has been selected for Lowe’s 2026 Community Impact Projects!

Earlier this year, Lowe’s asked communities nationwide, “What’s on your bucket list?” New Horizons shared a dream for the backyard at our Troy Binder House, and this fall, that dream will begin to take shape.

Lowe’s associates will roll up their sleeves to help transform the backyard with accessible pathways, recreation spaces, shaded picnic areas, and tranquil outdoor features. The result will be a safe, inclusive space where our Members can connect, enjoy time with family and friends, and thrive.

New Horizons is proud to be among projects representing 90 communities across 38 states. We are incredibly grateful to Lowe’s for investing its time, talent, and resources in the individuals we serve and in communities across the country.

We can’t wait to share the progress and finished space with you!

BIG NEWS! 🎨🧡 We got the grant!

New Horizons has been awarded a Community Impact Arts Grant from the LA County Department of Arts and Culture — and it's going straight to work funding our CreARTive Collective, where our members explore printmaking, ceramics, mosaics, and collage alongside professional artists from our community.

We're honored to be one of just 87 organizations across LA County selected for 2026–2027. To our members: more classes, more artists, more masterpieces ahead. 🖌️

As our printmaking instructor Xitlalic says: "Art has no limits."

Thank you Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture and the LA County Board of Supervisors for believing in the power of art to change lives! 💛
