LIZ BOYLE TELLS COUNTY BOARD SUPPORT 1ST AMMENDMENT
County Board of Commissioners- Tuesday June 2, 2026-
Good morning, Commissioners Mast, Cutsinger, Smith, Sheriff Knight and Dr. Neunder, and thank you for the opportunity to speak. My name is Liz Boyle, and I live in Venice. I have lived in Sarasota full-time for over 25 years. I’m here today because my friends and I have experienced repeated interference from Sarasota County employees while we are exercising our First Amendment rights on the Legacy Trail pedestrian bridge in Venice.
We are part of a national, peaceful movement called Visibility Brigade –Rush-Hour Resistance. Nearly every state has at least one
active bridge brigade. Every Friday morning from 8 to 9am, people
across this country — from Chicago to Los Angeles, from Bangor,
Maine to Houston, Texas — gather on pedestrian bridges to express their political beliefs. In cities such as Holyoke; Arlington, Jackson; Kalamazoo, St. Paul, St. Louis; Buffalo and Erie, we stand with American flags and with our mostly homemade signs to share our views on national issues, including our belief that President Trump should immediately be removed from office because we see him as a clear and present danger to the country. ---Another local group does the same at the Legacy Trail bridge at Clark and McIntosh Roads in Sarasota. These gatherings are brief, peaceful, and entirely non-destructive. We do not block traffic, we do not damage property, and we are consistently polite to everyone who passes by. Despite this, Sarasota County employees have approached us multiple times, telling us they have received quote-unquote “complaints.” We understand that complaints happen. But what concerns us is that the interactions have gone beyond simple notification. On several occasions, employees have made comments about the content of our signs telling us what they think we “should” be doing instead — including telling us we
should “help the homeless,” -----as if we all haven’t already spent
decades supporting policies and programs that help people in need.
We are taxpayers. And we are peacefully expressing our views in a
public space. What we are doing is protected by the First Amendment. What we are not doing is causing harm, creating hazards, or violating any ordinance.
When county employees repeatedly approach us, question our presence, or comment on the substance of our speech, it creates a chilling effect. It feels like an attempt to discourage or deter us because someone disagrees with our message. That is not the role of government employees, and it is not consistent with constitutional protections.
We want to continue our peaceful demonstrations without being hassled or pressured. We want county staff to understand that their personal opinions about our signs are irrelevant, and that their role is to uphold the rights of all residents equally — regardless of viewpoint. Commissioners, we are asking for your help to ensure that Sarasota County employees receive clear guidance:
 that peaceful expressive activity on public property is protected,
 that comments about the content of anyone’s speech are
inappropriate and can be perceived as intimidation.
We love this community. We love this country. We respect the Rule of Law. We simply want to exercise our rights without being intimidated by government employees. Thank you for your time and for all that each of you has done to improve this community over the years.

Florida Democrats,

Today kicks off our Statewide Weekend of Action — and there’s still time to be part of it.

All across the state, Florida Democrats are getting voters ready for the elections ahead: knocking doors, making calls, bringing more people in, and growing the year-round organizing infrastructure we need to win in August and November.

Here are three ways to plug in this weekend:

1. Find an event near yo

Want the easiest way to help right now? Join our statewide Vote-by-Mail re-enrollment phonebank today from 1:00–3:00 PM.
We’ll provide the training, script, and support. You’ll help call Democrats and make sure they know they need to re-enroll in Vote-by-Mail for 2026.

With your help, we're ready to make more than 50,000 calls!

3. Host your own action

Every door we knock, every call we make, and every voter we reach helps us Take Back Florida in August and November.
Let’s go, Democrats!

All the best,

WHAT? You missed the May 16 meeting? Here are the minutes.

Key Information from Membership Meeting 5/16/2026
Introduction of featured speaker: Ron Zaleski. At 19 years of age he
joined the United States Marine Corps, serving in the Vietnam era
from 1970 to 1972. When he returned home from the military, he
learned that two members of his squadron had been shot and killed in combat, the other three injured. In 2006, he wrote The Long Walk Home, after he set out to walk barefoot across the
Appalachian Trail. He traversed 2,200 miles of woods and wildlife,
learning self-forgiveness, empathy and finding a purpose greater
than himself, all the while without shoes. The Long Walk Home
program is ever-growing in its mission to bring awareness to, and
more importantly, prevent Veteran su***de.
 He spoke of the moral injury many veterans carry. He developed
the “10 Challenges to Service” program, similar to a step program
to help guys shift their perceptions. There are three active
groups at Venice YMCA, American Legion, and Center of Hope.
 He works with incarcerated veterans and emphasizes the
transformative impact of guided group reflection.
 There is an urgent need for mentors, volunteers, and community
engagement to reduce veteran su***de.
 He emphasized the importance of compassion, accountability,
and service as tools for healing.

President’s Report: Frank Mowery delivered a statement on current
U.S. foreign policy.
 Trump’s obsession with Iran’s nuclear weapons and his
destruction of the Iran nuclear agreement of 2016 have put the
U.S. in financial crisis. The agreement, signed by the US and
world leaders, severely restricted Iran’s use of uranium.
 There is a need for accountability in political leadership.
 H emphasized the urgency of the 2026 election cycle and the
responsibility to mobilize neighbors and communities.

 Introduction of three candidates:
Cynthia Butler running for State House district #75. She
emphasized her commitment to climate change issues, clean
energy, affordable health care, and worker protection, fighting
corporate greed to stop over development, and support for small
businesses. Her platform is focused on transparency,
accountability and putting working families first.

Nancy Simpson running for State House district #74. She spoke
about her family’s long history of military service. Florida has one
of the largest % of veterans and there is a need for state-level
action to support them. She advocates for teachers, unions and
fixing what is broken in Tallahassee. ww.electnancysimpson.com

Matt Montavon candidate for U.S. House of Representatives (FL-
17) running against Rep. Greg Steube. He is committed to
representing working families, protecting democratic institutions,
and restoring responsible leadership. There are opportunities to
volunteer to support his campaign.

Membership Outreach Report: Karen Ball
 Volunteers are needed to help with VADC website, newsletter

willing to assist precinct work. We also need people to attend
city council, school board and hospital board meetings to keep us
informed.
