Yesterday, City staff and residents had the honor of hearing from retired U.S. Navy Captain Charlie Plumb, a Vietnam War POW who spent nearly six years in captivity after his plane was shot down over Hanoi.

After returning home, Capt. Plumb continued serving in the Navy, completing more than 30 years of service and helping lay the groundwork for what would become Top Gun at Miramar.

Thank you, Capt. Plumb, for sharing your inspiring story and for your lifetime of service and sacrifice.

And thank you to the Newport Beach Fire Department Foundation for making this special presentation possible.

With Labor Day weekend approaching, the City is monitoring a developing tropical system that could bring increased surf and coastal flooding to Newport Beach.

The storm is currently expected to stay offshore, but its path could still change. Tropical swells could begin Saturday or Sunday and may coincide with higher-than-normal tides.

While impacts remain uncertain, residents who would like to take extra precautions can pick up free prefilled sandbags at the City’s Corporation Yard (592 Superior Avenue). Empty sandbags are also available at Newport Beach fire stations.

If you’re heading to the beach, always swim near an open lifeguard tower, follow posted warnings and use extra caution as conditions can change quickly.

The City will continue monitoring forecasts and beach conditions throughout the week and will share updates as the forecast becomes clearer.

With the new school year underway, the City of Newport Beach and Newport Beach Police Department are monitoring bicycle ...

With the new school year underway, the City of Newport Beach and Newport Beach Police Department are monitoring bicycle parking in neighborhoods near local elementary and junior high schools following Newport-Mesa Unified School District’s e-bike ban.

While many bicycles are legally parked, some have been left blocking sidewalks, alleys or roadways. NBPD is conducting daily assessments, and bicycles that create a public safety risk or are attached to City property may be removed. Bicycles attached to private property may also be removed at the property owner’s request.

NBPD continues to coordinate with NMUSD and monitor safety concerns around schools during peak times.

To report a bicycle creating a potential safety hazard, please call NBPD’s non-emergency line at 949-644-3717.

Are you passionate about your community? Want to learn how local government works, connect with city leaders, and make your voice count? The Mayor’s Youth Council is looking for motivated students to join our 2026–2027 program! In this unique, unpaid internship experience, you’ll participate in special events, service projects, and city initiatives, gaining valuable leadership, teamwork, and public speaking skills, all while working alongside City staff.

• Applications are due by September 4, 2026.
• There is an informational meeting scheduled for all applicants on September 10 at 4:00 p.m.
