Are you a business owner or an employee whose workplace has a monitored fire alarm system?

If your building has a monitored fire alarm system and the fire alarm activates, your job is simple:

➡️ Evacuate immediately.
➡️ Move to a safe location.
➡️ Call 911 if it hasn't already been done.

DO NOT press buttons on the fire alarm control panel.

While it may be tempting to reset the system, or investigate the cause yourself, doing so can create serious problems:

❌ Resetting the system may erase important information that firefighters need to determine where the alarm originated.
❌ You could delay the fire department's response and investigation.
❌ If smoke detectors or other devices are still in alarm, resetting the panel may cause confusion and waste valuable time.
❌ Unauthorized operation of the fire alarm system could create liability issues and place occupants at risk.

Fire alarm systems are designed to protect lives. When the alarm sounds, treat every activation as a potential emergency until emergency responders determine otherwise.

Your responsibility is to safely evacuate and account for everyone in the building.

This past Thursday West Milford Fire Companies 2, 1 and 4 were dispatched for a MVC on Rt. 23 North and Clinton Road. Fortunately nobody was trapped, but there were serious injuries caused by the crash. As it is rare to see an air medical helicopter land on the highway it does happen from time to time. This was a necessary step that needed to be taken. We would like to thank Hackensack Air 1 and Atlantic ALS and BLS for their quick response and their assistance.

Congratulations to all of our West Milford Recruits

The past couple months, numerous members of the department have been undergoing Firefighter 1 and Firefighter 2 training.

First, the Firefighter 1 class included 6 West Milford recruits. The Firefighter 1 program is approximately 6 months long which tests the knowledge and skills of “The Basics” such as Forcible Entry, Building Construction, Fire Behavior, SCBA, Hose Advancement, Water Supply, Knots, Search and Rescue, Ladders, Fire Suppression and Ventilation. After the lecture and practice exercises, the recruits go through a day of practice skills testing, which the recruits are all required to pass. The following day, they take a 100 question state exam which the recruits are required to pass with a minimum of an 70%. Finally, the recruits will undergo approximately a month of HAZMAT training including multiple quizzes which the recruits are required to pass. I am happy to announce that all West Milford Firefighter 1 recruits have passed their state exams and have moved on to HAZMAT training.

The Firefighter 2 training is approximately a 4 month hybrid program which includes lectures and practical skills sessions such as advanced fire attack, vehicle extrication, confined space awareness, and multiple classes of rolling response scenarios. The firefighter 2 class is an officer preparation class where the recruits will be placed into the Incident Commander roll to begin making decisions and running various incidents. At the completion, a state exam is given where recruits are required to score a minimum of a 70% to pass. All 8 West Milford recruits have passed their Firefighter 2 exams. These classes require hard work and dedication by these VOLUNTEERS. Fine work by all and see you on the fire ground.
