After attending a Pathways to Industrial and Construction Careers (PINCC) event, first-year apprentice Ian Pierre discovered the many opportunities available in the skilled trades. Through the event, he learned about apprenticeship programs offered by District Council 9 (DC 9), a local union of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT).

DC 9 represents painters, decorators, drywall finishers, sign painters, metal polishers, bridge and structural steel painters, civil service painters, lead abatement workers, glaziers, architectural metal and glass workers, and paint makers throughout New York. More than 70% of the union's apprentices are women or minorities, and all apprentices receive a combination of on-the-job and classroom training to prepare them for successful careers in the trades.

"If you're not a big college person, the trades are the way to go," Ian said. "You'll find your place there."

The DSS Marketplace is driven by partnership with the City’s nonprofit human service providers. Meeting us at our mission, organizations like the Volunteers of America - Greater New York show up at our Matchmakers ready to engage locally certified vendors. Thanks to them, roughly 1 in 6 participating vendors who attend our Matchmakers go on to win a contract or subcontract. These relationships contribute to local solutions, local jobs, and local wealth.

If you’re a locally certified business, or think you might qualify for certification, please email us at [email protected] or visit our Marketplace Resource Page. We’d be happy to connect you with information about resources, upcoming Matchmakers, and opportunities to contract with us and our partners. If you’re a private business, non-profit, or other institution looking for local talent, visit us here: https://on.nyc.gov/marketplace

Child Support Makes a Difference! A NYC Mayoral Proclamation recognized today, August 28, as NYC HRA Office of Child Support Services Day, celebrated by HRA Administrator Scott French, DSS Chief Program Officer Rebecca Chew, and HRA Office of Child Support Services Executive Deputy Commissioner Frances Pardus-Abbadessa.

The ceremony in Manhattan recognized the contributions of the NYC child support office collecting $3.5 billion in child support income over the past 5 years and serving hundreds of thousands of children, parents, and guardians. The child support program reduces child poverty throughout the City. A custodial parent spoke about the benefits of the program helping her children to thrive.

Yesterday, apprentice plumbers from UA Local Union No. 1 The Plumbers of New York City got a step up in their careers with new work boots from DSS Employment Services and NYC Talent Pathways to Industrial and Construction Careers (PINCC) program. Quality tools and gear are essential in the building trades and can be a financial barrier to entering a great career.
