🐘🌍 WORLD ELEPHANT DAY — 12 AUGUST
Today, we celebrate the world’s largest land animal.
But celebration alone is not enough.
Elephants around the world are facing habitat loss, fragmentation, human–elephant conflict, poaching and the illegal ivory trade. Asian elephants are now reduced to fewer than 40,000 worldwide. (World Elephant Day)
And in Sri Lanka, the numbers demand our attention.
🇱🇰 In 2024, 388 wild elephants died, while 155 people lost their lives in human–elephant conflict. In 2023, the figures were even higher — 488 elephants and 182 people. (Hiru News)
These are not just numbers.
Every elephant lost is a life.
Every calf left without its mother is a story.
Every destroyed habitat is a warning.
Sri Lanka has laws, institutions and conservation programmes. But the continuing loss of elephants raises a serious question:
Are we doing enough?
We need stronger enforcement.
We need science-based, long-term solutions.
We need protected habitats and safe elephant corridors.
We need accountability.
And above all, we need a future where people and elephants can coexist.
The elephant cannot speak in our parliaments.
It cannot demand protection.
So we must raise our voices for them.
